Subject: US driver's license
Hi there, I am an international student in Canada, I have a visitor´s visa to US, do you know whether I can get driver´s license in US with a visitor´s visa?

In Quebec I have to wait for 6 months after my learner´s license to get a driver´s license, could you please tell about getting a license in Ontario? I don´t have a license and it is hard to stay away from behind the wheel. Appreciate your help.

For most US states you have to be in the US at least for one year before you can get a licence. Go to individual US DOT websites to check.

its not actually the time periuod i think, its your status in the country that determines if a driver licence should be issued to you or not. Go to local Secretary of State office and apply for Licence and let see what pops up.

For you, in both cases, you need SSN for USA to get DL.
Same for the Canada. If you are student you need SIN to get DL, if you are landed immigrant, your immigration paper and address, enough to get DL.

i am a US citizen and waiting on PR. I don´t have any documents or a SIN. I am in Ontario, and I turned in my Indiana license, showed proof of how long i had a valid licence, and no convictions, they checked my eyes, took my picture i paid $75 for a 5 year license and in a couple weeks my Ontario license came in the mail.

just check with a local drive test centre. or their website! google it.

goodluck!

Hi Mountains,

How long do you plan to stay in the US? Some states honor foreign license for 90 days. You can still try to apply for a DL even without SSN but with additional paperworks. You would need to get a letter from Social Security saying that you don´t have SSN because______. My wife having an H4 visa doesn´t have SSN but was able to get a license. I just don´t know if this is applicable in all states.

Hi Joe05,

That seems to be interesting.

As I am a student in Canada, I keep visiting US from time to time, so the 90 days license doesn´t arise in my case.

Could you please tell me which state you are in, and also, if possible, the states in US that are flexible with this option without SSN.

Hi Mountains,

We used to live in South Carolina, and now in New Jersey. Might be worth calling the local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) of your destination to be sure.
