Subject: imp question on socal security amt in USA
  Hello Friends,
I have a question on the following scenario:
There would be several of us who have lived in the US for many years and have paid social security amounts for future retirement benefits etc. Some of us are now planning or may have become Canadian PR´s.I know for certain countries such as India this social security amount can not be repatriated bcos of absence of some bilateral treaty between the countries.
My question is, if I move to canada as a PR and later become citizen, can I transfer the amount deposited here in the US to Canada?
Those of you are aware, please enlighten us.

No, you cannot do that becuase you have to be in US for atleast 10 years before you can start claiming SS benefits, this is true even if you are on a visa in US.

The rule H1 6 years is for a purpose and requires you to leave the coutry for one year before you can come back.

Solution : if in US for 6 years, move to Canada live there for 3 years, become Can citizen. come back to US on H1 or NAFTA work here for 4 more years, you will be eligible to
claim SS benefits.

Thanks,
Brian

There are other ways to do your 10 years in one shot. Many people who are on H1 and have their aplications for Green card pending (Or LC for thet matter), can keep on extending their H1 visas indefinitely. so, you can be in the US for more than 6 years even on H1 Visa.
Intersting thought Jack! This never came to my mind. If everything goes as planned, we´d be moving to Canada after about 7 years on H1 in the US. So, we can come back and work for another 3 years and claim the SS benefits.

My question is: Can we get the benefits living in Canada , and if yes , how? monthly payments or lumpsum transfer to some acocunt in Canada?

Thanks for yopur views, guys.
I hate the thought that I´d be inaccessible to use my own money !!!
Having said that, I had heard that this amount is repartriable if the two country have some kindda treaty. I´m not sure if thats with 10 year condition. Could someone throw some light?
Thx

As a US citizen (but hopefully one day a Canadian citizen), I´ve wondered about this too. What happens to the social security we´ve paid into? Are you saying that as long as we´ve lived in the US for 10 years, it becomes accessible to us no matter where we live? Thanks for any clarification.
