Subject: USA or CANADA?
My finace and I are desperately trying to research ways of being together, as I am a Canadian, and he is an American. I have read many various posts in regards to personal experiences, immigrating to either country, and so my question is. Would it be easier for me to obtain a K-1 Fiancee visa and move to the USA? or would it be much easier to sponser him and have him move up here? Thanks for you time.

The US fianc? is by far the quickest way... assuming you want to immigrate to the US.

With the K-1, you can hop skip and jump your way into immigrating. For immigrating to Canada, you have to do it in one, long, complicated step.

I think with the K-1, you may be able to get that in 3 months, where you would then have to go to the US (within a certain time frame), and once there you would have to marry your fianc? (within a time certain time frame).

Once married, I think you then go for your green card. I don´t think you will be able to 1. Work in the US until you have your green card and 2. Be able to travel back to Canada until you have your green card.

As far as him getting his Canadian PR, or you getting your US green card, I don´t know which is quicker, but as far as "being together" on a permanent basis, I think the K-1 is the way to go. Just be prepared to not be able to work for a year or so, nor be able to travel outside of the US until your case is settled (I mean, they cannot stop you from leaving, but they can stop you from coming back if your case isn´t settled... I remember someone on a different website mentioning this... I think it was a yahoo newsgroup called "canadianslivinginthestates".). Maybe check the yahoo newsgroups and find this one, and post a question similar to the one you posted, and you will get a lot of answers.

You can work in US too. When you apply for greed card you should apply for work permit and you can work after about 1 1/2 months.
Good Luck

I have personally gone through getting a green card in the usa and it goes alot faster after you are married. I got my green card within about 5-6 months but only after I had my perm res. You can get work when you are a perm res and then apply as soon as you can to get your green card. ALWAYS make appointments when you go to the INS offices or you will be waiting for sometime depending on where you go. I am a born Canadian citizen and my husband is American and we are trying for him to move to canada. I believe that going to the US is alot faster than Canada.

thank you so much for your time and response. My main concern is being able to work.. and how long it would take to process a work visa.
Can I throw in another question? My passport recently expired, and I´m wondering if I absolutely need one to cross over the border? I know the laws have changed since 9/11. Any more personal accounts or advice regarding K-1s, or any other way for me to be with my fiance, is greatly appreciated!!!
