Subject: Landing information - Toronto Airport 2011
  Hello everyone,

Looking forward to land in Toronto on 19th July, 2011, as a skilled class immigrant around 1a.m. Can somebody please help me, i have some questions:

1). PROOF OF FUNDS:
How are they going to check my ´Proof of funds´? Preferably should i take them in form of Cash or draft? If in Cash, when i will be able to open my bank account? Do i need to wait for PR card?

2). LIST OF GOODS:
Custom Officer will ask for the list of goods that we are bringing along with us in our bags, am i right? the list will include toothbrush, socks, underwears?

3). LANDING LATE AT NIGHT IN TORONTO:
We are arriving late at night around 1:00a.m after 14hours of journey. how much will the customs and immigration officers will take? At what time will we get free? Taxis available 4a.m or 5a.m? Crime?

4). HOTEL:
Any decent and cheap hotel suggestion? Where immigrants usually go when they land. The Leading Hotels. Pick and drop service from the airport? :)

I will be really grateful if anyone of u will help me out on this.

Regards.

1). PROOF OF FUNDS:

If in Cash, when I will be able to open my bank account?

You need an identification (a valid passport, etc) and a proof of address. Some may require your Social Insurance Number, but some ethic financial institute such as Ukrainian credit union may assist you with a bank account.

"Welcome to Canada" program at a local bank. Check it out!

Do i need to wait for PR card?

No, PR cards are not required to open a bank account.

2). LIST OF GOODS:
Custom Officer will ask for the list of goods that we are bringing along with us in our bags, am i right? the list will include toothbrush, socks, underwears?

Anything to declare?

3). LANDING LATE AT NIGHT IN TORONTO:
We are arriving late at night around 1:00a.m after 14hours of journey. how much will the customs and immigration officers will take?

It depends on CBSA and Canada custom.

At what time will we get free? Taxis available 4a.m or 5a.m? Crime? Taxi everywhere, city TV.

4). HOTEL:
Any decent and cheap hotel suggestion? Global trotter back packer village in downtown.

Also there are many hotels around the airport.

The process is pretty straight forward in most cases.

When you approach the Customs and Immigration booth, there is going to be a CBSA officer that is going to ask you a very simple couple of question.

1- Are you landing?
You say yes.
2- Do you have anything to declare or anything that is arriving in a LATER date.
Then you answer yey or ney.
After that the officer is going to send you to a secondary inspection.

There an officer is going to ask you a couple of questions and proof of funds. Depending on how many people are at the secondary inspection facility, you can be out of the airport in no time.

Your inspection takes only about 10 minutes. The problem is when there are lots of flights arriving at the same time and several customers are sent to secondary. That is what usually delay things. You should arrange for accomodations and preferably to have an address so CIC can mail your PR card. If you don´t have an address, the CBSA officer is going to give you a sheet with a fax number. Make sure you fax it when you have an address so CIC can mail your PR card.

Next day in the morning, you can go and apply for your SIN number and open a bank account. It is not a big deal at all.

If you waited a few years for your PR application to go through, I am pretty sure that an extra 10 to 40 minutes you should be able to handle it.

I am wonderring guys, is it ok for the process if you show bank account statement from your homecountry (the country where you are coming from to Canada) bank when a CBSA officer asks for a proof of funds at the inspection facility??? if yes, how long time is the acceptable deadlinf of bank account statement, 3 days before arriving, 2 mounths or 4 mounths before landing??

Thanks for your ideas in advance!
