Subject: FSW plan realistic ?
  Gentlemen,

I have a bachelor´s degree in Electronics Engineering, and I´m working in a huge multi-national oilfield services company.

I am planning to immigrate to Canada under the Federal Skilled Worker program. I have 2 years of experience in my occupation, which classifies in the NOC as:
-8222 Supervisors, Oil and Gas Drilling and Service

I´m looking for a career change. Rather than waste my time in getting my Engineering B.S.c recognized, I am planning to obtain an MEng. degree from a Canadian university.

My main concern -however- is that I don´t want to spend 12-18 months without any source of income. TAs do not pay that much... I´ve read it´s around 1,500$ per semester.

My question is.. Is it possible to work part time as a programmer or a web designer or any other similar computer-centric job that would leverage my computer/engineering skills ? It would be a waste of skills to work as a waiter for minimum wage.

Does this sound like a realistic plan ? I already hold savings that are enough to support me for 2 years of stay. I just don´t want to blow it up ! :)
Any ideas, suggestions are more than welcome.

Regards,
Ahmed

2 things to think about - Web designers are a dime a dozen out there. With the arrival of Wordpress, Joomla and Druple there is hardly anyone out there developing websites from scratch. Even Mashable uses a Wordpress platform. The heavy duty programmers I know are still waiting for the US economy to turn around so they get some decent contracts again.

Do not misunderstand the next part - waiters make minimum wage PLUS they make tips. Usually doubling their set wages - possibly more. Don´t feel too sad for serious waiters. Feel sad for the dishwasher at Taco Bell and MacDonalds. Big difference.

Watch for Bill to chime in. He is the oil and gas guy around here. I have not seen much of him lately but he will likely have some good advice for you.
