Subject: Effect of Divorce on immigrant status
My friend and his family were approved to immigrate to Canada. My friend was the primary applicant. My friend landed in Canada in April 2008. His wife and 3 kids landed their immigrant visas two weeks later. The wife and 2 children went back to country of origin (Phils) after 3-week stay and came back to Canada after 1 yr (May 2009). In sum, my friend has been living in Canada for 20 months straight now and the wife for abt 8 months (left canada again for a month in Oct 2009). Only 1 kid is below 18 now.

My friend´s marriage was not doing well even before immigrating to Canada and now gone from bad to worse. If my friend files for divorce, can the wife lose her PR status? If she can, will that be automatic due to the divorce or the primary applicant´s (my friend) withdrawal of support. Thanks.

No, she will not lose her PR status and he cannot withdraw the support. He signed an undertaking "contract" for a period of 3 years plus he will have to pay child support and the whole nine yards.
