Subject: Fears of immigration
  Dear members,

I am from mumbai,India, I started this process of immigration in Dec´03 and now I expect to finally get over this by Dec´09 and land in Canada. Thought I have patiently been waiting for the immigraton to come through, I have moved up the corporate ladder in India and am very decently settled. I am confused as in whether to goa head and finally take a call to immigrate or to let the phase pass by and continue in India. I am 32yrs, i have my wife and my son who wold also be moving in.

My fear is that leaving a settled life here, how will it impact the lifestyle in Canada. My son is jsut 3 yrs, how & what are the facilities that I will be able to provide him once we are there.

People say in 10-12 yrs time India will be the place to live in, today one report suggests that reverse brain drain has already started..These things have given me a thought to think twice befor I move on.

from whatever I have read on this forum, it looks possitive to be in canada, but nonetheless as human psycology goes one has to have his set of worries/fears.

I would like to take an opinion from like minded people who can change my fears to a possitive feeling.

Would appreciate quick replies.

You only want positive feelings so why ask? You have already made up your mind. No one can tell you what is personally best for you.

There was an article in the Toronto Star about a Canadian´s climb up the corporate ladder until she reached Bell Canada and then the lady was terminated.

She thought about not getting on the corporate ladder one more time.

Now she is writing books about her dog, is happy and making more money then she ever did climbing that ladder.

It is a valid question and one that deserves responses. I think you need to ask yourself what you really hope to gain from immigrating. Do you have political reasons, cultural issues, or...? Every immigrant has their own reasons to uproot themselves and start new, and they must be well founded and well researched in order to expect success.

We were in a situation similar to yours: established in a good profession, settled (finally) in our community, and with no pressing need to leave. But, we had a nagging thought that the grass might be greener if we lived where we vacationed and so we took the plunge. What we have found--and this is only OUR experience--is that what makes a great vacation area makes a disappointing place to live, given our lifestyle and our expectations of what we want to provide our child and how we want to live our lives.

It sounds to me like you need to do some major soul searching before taking the leap. Do a lot of research on the country and the city/area in which you plan to locate. Do you have contacts there? What do you think of the education system and the opportunities for your child? Do the culture and general lifestyle mesh with your own expectations and hopes or will you have a difficult transition? Can you afford to start over? Be open to what you might find (about Canada and about yourself) and be completely honest.

I hope you find your answer, even if it´s not the one you expect to find.

Hi There,

It will be who will be taking decisions, just do your homework, moving to a new land is not that easy, we all have great dreams and we think a new land would be much better, ...However, if you take me personally (I guess a highly educated, hardworking person, lived in many English speaking countries) I honestly regret that I had moved to Canada, may be I should feel better when I consider those who have been losing their jobs in Canada but still after four years still thinking of going to my own country and probably I would go back ....The lifestyle I am having here is far below my life that I used to have in my own country... Instead of saving money I kept on spending all my saved money from my own country, ..the result is a waste of time, energy and hopes...

Sorry the intention was not to encourage you but this is the reality here I feel that people are hungry in this country, ..in your town in India do you have for instance 3.500 homeless people only in your town living in the streets? This is the number I read in the paper about Vancouver, which a thought a beautiful place a paradise for all people but...but..reality reality really bites, Canada is not the country you see in immigration booklets, tourist broshures or in media...

Dear MN2712,

Life is not that easy in CA unless you are lucky and get a job of your choice. I saw many highly skilled professionals working in less desrving low paid jobs. I saw a few without a job for months then deciding to go on H1B to USA or finding a job overseas. Do more research, discuss with any of your friends/relatives that live in CA. There are positive aspects to the life here like good education, healthcare and so on..I don´t want to discourage or encourage you. I would still think India is great minus corruption.

A frank advice to you, moving to another country/company/organization is easy but difficult is to grow and establish in it. My answer is neither yes or no,
are u prepared to give up everything to start afresh..?
weather it is India or Canada or US...
If thinking of immigration take a break from your company for 3-6 months, dont bring your family along, dont sell anything,
come here and if you like it then go back and do the needful,
