I have the following charges on my record. I found out several days that i was supposed to be get clearance to enter Canada, however I have the following charges.

1978 driving with suspended license
1978 criminal trespass
1979 two counts 1st degree robbery
1990 4th degree assault

I am a professional speaker that uses his past to encourage students not to take the pathway that i did so many years ago. I was scheduled to be a keynote speaker to 400 Canadian youth, and just found out that because of my past I might not be able to cross the border.

I know there are several options deemed rehabilitation, streemlined rehabilitation, individual rehabilitation and TRP from what I have been reading, though because of the number of offenses I don´t know which i am not qualified for. I have been researching this all week and gathering documents, sent out for my State and FBI Certificates, went to the courthouse and the documents for the 1979 robbery conviction which was later dismissed in 2002 by a Superior Court Judge, and for the 1990 case. While at the courthouse I found a positive letter from my psychiatric social worker and prison counselor and documents from when I attended school.

I am waiting to hear back from the counties with the two 1978 cases to get final disposition or letters stating that they were destroyed. I can provide more than adequate number of reference letters from government agencies, schools, youth groups, parents, students, and you name it that I have received over the years plus a number of awards and certificates of appreciation.

Thank you,

Dennis Mitchell

Dennis your a motivational speaker who was a silly boy once and is teaching others how to turn their life around.

It appears clear from your posting that your not the same person you were in the 70´s. You left out details regarding the 1990 conviction though.

Not knowing which state and since I could not equate these convictions my response would be.

HOW COULD ANY CBSA OFFICER NOT FIND YOU DEEMED REHABILTATED?

So go early and drive to the border and asked to be deemed rehabilitated. Have accommodation and evidence of where your going to speak and when your going to leave.

Motivate the CBSA officer. You will be fine.

Hi Roy,

Thank you for your reply. The 1990 was a domestic violence, i was seeing several women at the same time, one of them saw me with another, i tried to calm her down and there is nothing worse than a woman scorned so i was charged with dv.

I have heard of nightmare stories so i will be taking plenty of back up including two books I am in one of which is from the New York Times best selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series, an abundance of letters from government agencies, department of corrections, schools etc., that I have worked with as well as a portable dvd player to play the documentary that the Correction Learning Network plays on my life in prisons across the USA, a Demo DVD of what I do and a copy of my song "Choices". In addition to further assert my claim, I am including an awards section where I will have copies of about 10 awards I have received. My philosophy is it´s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

I have everything laid out in a nice packet with dividers so they can easily access any information and a letter from the group that I will be speaking stating where when and why i will be speaking about the dangers of DUI, choices and personal responsibility.

Should I go to a Service Port or Port of Entry and would you advise I go several weeks before my trip or just give myself ample time on my way there? I can see advantages and disadvantages to both.

Lastly, since I just found out, I had to write and get my police certificates, I spoke with the Washington State Patrol in the state where I live and I should have theirs back next week but the FBI´s who knows? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dennis
