Subject: How does Canada knows?
I just got back to the States after a short visit to Vancouver, (where im planning to move to once i become a PR) anyways, going in they asked me for my passport asked the usual and they did not even stamped it, which pissed me off couse i collect those, anyways on my way back the US border guy just asked me what i did, i told him and say thank you...

SO how the hell does canada finds out if i left? i ask that because once i become a PR, i belive i need to be in Canada for at least 2 years (maybe 3) so that i dont loose my status, but i feel i could very well walk in party all night and then go back to Seattle and Canada wouldnt know at all... can anyone tell me what the deal with this is?

This is the extra liberty Canada is providing you. Canada will never know if you go to USA and from there you go back to any other country stay there 3 years, come back to US and enter Canada and apply for citizenship. I am sorry but this is what it is and a lot of people are exploiting this liberty and Canada knows it very well but they are some how closing their eyes on this issue. Don´t know why?

the same is true for the US though, as i mention the US had no idea i left, not that it matters but its true... this however only applies for Land crossings I have friends from Mexico and Australia and they where telling me that when they fly back Home they have to hand down a piece of paper before they board the plane does canada have something similar?

Mike absolutely correct.

I heard even stories of people got citizenship with even only 1 year of real physical staying...

In a single car there can be more than 1 person.

Can use rental car...Share with others...

car plate would be a very gross idea and I don´t think CIC is considering that.

There is no car plates, nothing in place in terms of monitoring visits of Canadians to US. And this is something very common and thats why i assume that CIC knows what is going on and still there is no remedy availabale. By the way, car plates can´t be a remedy for this because people use buses, trains and ride with friends and family.

I noticed this quirk in the system too. When re-entering Canada, immigration officers will ask returning PRs how long they´ve been outside of Canada. They´re supposed to answer accurately.

The other issue is that Canada and U.S. share much database immigration data. When leaving Canada, one does have to show documentation to enter the U.S. At both crossings, PR cards and passports are now machine swiped, which enters the holder´s identity, date, and other crossing information into the database, and displays historical travel data for the officer.

The point is that there may be more information tracked and known now with shared database data, due to the recent strict rules for documentation requirements in crossing the borders.

At least not so far Richard. Yes, if they wish then they can swipe the PR card and can share the data later. They are still not that eager.

US immigration never even ask my wife to show her Canadian PR card, all they care about valid US visa.

did you hand your passport to the officer? if so, he scanned it. they have everything they need to know.
