Subject: New start in Canada
I am from England and live there with my partner and our 2 young children.

I work for the police taking the 999 calls and my partner works in a warehouse on a production line/ driving FLT trucks

I have tried to fill out an immigration form online but we do not get enough points and are told we are not eligible to relocate to Canada

My partner has family in Toronto but they are only second cousins as well as a maternal aunt.

Is there another way we can come over to Canada to try and give our kids a better future?

Consider coming over under the work permit program. That way you´d be able to increase your points with additional work experience and demonstrate that you´re skills are in demand. I also think immigration looks favorably upon those already legally working in Canada when applying for permanent status within Canada.

Depending how close you are in points, consider learning French, which will add points. You should also get a university degree, if you don´t have one now.

UK is not too shabby a place either. I wouldn´t think it´s a place to life raft away from, Cuba style. Every time I´ve been there I considered moving there. But then you have to live in a place to really understand the economics.

look at a work permit or PNP program to BC. also check the civilian hiring at the Vancouver Police department

Thanks to Richard and Sharon for that

England is a nice place to live, in some places, we seem to pay out all of the time. if its not taxes and a pretty unsteady economy at present then its the teenage yobs running our streets with knives and guns, god knows what it will be like in 10 years, i am also aware that everywhere has problems but on the whole i think Canada has more to offer my children.

Hi Kate,

As Richard and Sharon said, going over on work permit is a good idea. As well as learning French.

How many points do you have? I am assuming you did the self evaluation test on the CIC site (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assess/index.asp)

Also, you may want to attend the Emigrate Show. There is one coming up in London next weekend (March 1 and 2). http://www.emigrate2.co.uk/shows_and_publications.htm

Apparently there will be someone there from CIC London. However, I would caution you of the many sales pitches you would hear there.

What is a Emigrate show anyway and what goes on there?

I am not sure i know what you mean when you say there will be lots of sales pitches?

Emigrate show is an exhibition held in the UK (various cities) throughout the year. It?s organized by a publisher of a magazine geared towards those who would like to immigrate to another country (Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are the main destinations).

The exhibitors are usually immigration consultants, and hence my comment about being wary of the sale pitch.

Although in the past consultants (Canadian and New Zealand) have also exhibited and you can talk to their staff (and if lucky enough visa officers) directly. The last one I went to had a Canadian visa officer (a very helpful one) who answered questions. There were also quite a few people from Alberta and British Columbia government answering questions on how to immigrate to those provinces.

If you can, I would recommend you attend, look through the website and see if its worth you going. I would also recommend you attend some of the talks (cost extra), but as I said one last year by the Canadian visa officer was very hepful.

Sorry, the following sentence should read:

"Although in the past consultants (Canadian and New Zealand) have also exhibited"

"Although in the past CONSULATES (Canadian and New Zealand) have also exhibited"
