Subject: Passport request
I have received passport request from Buffalo office. Their letter says to send original VALID passport. I have my current valid passport and a previous expired one. Do I need to send both to them or just the current valid one? please advise asap. Thanks.,

Send only the current one.

Be careful here.
I am in the same situation.

As Anonymous said send the valid one. HOWEVER, if your expired one contains important information like a valid US visa or something that justify your legal presence in the country you are in then SEND BOTH!!

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOUR PASSPORT REQUEST? I SUBMITTED ALL MY DOCUMENTS WITH THE MEDICAL IN LATE JULY. STILL WAITING.

To CBV333: Just curious, why would CIC care of justification of legal status in US? Their request says "Send original VALID passport". Even sending my expired passport along will not serve the purpose if they need to verify my legal status becuase the original US visa 2 yrs back. I´m in valid status as my I-94 is still valid until next year. So I guess, I will also need to send I-94 copy. But the question is, CIC didn´t ask to prove valid status, they asked only for valid passport.

I think you dont need to worry about expired passport, legal status in US as CIC dont care of these.

All they need is a VALID Passport for stamping of PR Visa.

OK maybe Praveen is right.

In my case, my valid status is in my old one and the forms I completed they have my old passport number. Maybe CIC does not care.

Just to be on the safe side. I would send the original I-94 just for them to see.

Just DO NOT send original I-94 to anyone. Send only copy. It should always be kept with you and turned in on departure from US. If you loose I-94, you can in big trouble, and will need to request dupllicate from USCIS.

what you said is true. If you lose your I-94 you will be in big trouble.

Once again my I-94 is strongly attached to my passport so I would not remove it.

But it is up to you.

I know someone who got his Canadian visa refused because his status in the US was about to expire. When we applied to SW worker one of the documents to provide is "legal status in the US" that is why I said that.

A previous member of this forum had a similar situation and he sent both passports and got both passport back with stamps on the new passport.

Uniden had recommended at that time to send both.

If you applied with your old passport number and have not informed them with the new passport details, you better send both to avoid any sort of confusion.
