Subject: Expired PRC Card
  Hello,
My Permenent Residents Card will expire soonand I will be renewing it after that. My question is will I be allowed to work or study while it is expired, or will an expired card mean that I lost my residense status? and is the PRC important for anything else than travelling??

Thank you

PR card and PR status are 2 different things (as I´ve been told by Canadian Immigration many times). Even though your PR card might be expired, it does not mean your residence status is expired. As long as you meet your residence requirements, it doesn´t matter what your PR card says. You´re still a resident.

The purpose of the PR card is not so much to validate your residence as a way to identify yourself to Canadian Immigration authorities when traveling to/from Canada. (Roy correct me if I´m wrong.)

Expired PRC Card (in reply to: Expired PRC Card)
Pillai,

You may be referred for an admissibility hearing when you renew your PR Card because it appears you may not have fulfilled the residency requirement - physical presence of 2 years out of 5. The exception is you are accompanying a Canadian or Permanent Resident spouse overseas. If you are deemed to not have met the residency requirement, your PR status will be stripped. Your lack of employment (economic factor) is unfortunately not a good reason in an appeal. Good luck

have you lived in Canada for 730 days in the last 5 years? you are going to have to prove this some how or your PR status may be void.

Can I apply for citizenship with Expired PRC (in reply to: Expired PRC Card)
My PR card is expired in Feb 2009. I have continues stay of almost 3 1/2 years in Canada. Can I apply directly for citizenship or I need to apply for a PRC first? I have no intentions of traveling outside Canada in next couple of years.
