| Subject: When to apply for Health Card - Ontario |

I am landing next week in toronto, i waant to know, when to apply for health card , i will land & come back to US for 2-3 months and then move to Canada for good
So should i apply now when i land or later when I move ,
If i apply now - advantage is i will have coverage when i move to Ca (90 days wait period will be completed in US)
is this fine or i will have problems with govt

You can apply right away, but you´re supposed to have established residence in Canada from this point, and not be residing in U.S. Even if you leave during this period, you´re not supposed to be outside of Canada for more than 30 days in the first 6 months. However, these rules are based on the honor system, especially when crossing the U.S./Canada border.
Ontario Ministry of Health:
"If you are a newcomer to Ontario, or a former resident returning here to live after being out of the country for more than seven months, the waiting period begins on the date you establish or re-establish residence in Ontario. You are also required to be present in Ontario for 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date residency is established in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residency)."

If and only if you have an address in Canada, it probably would be ok to land now. Provide Immigration with that address so they can send your PR Card in 30 days. While you´re in Canada, apply for your health card (you just need Confirmation of Permanent Residency document and an address in Canada). Then return to U.S. per your plans. But you really should return as soon as possible.

My family( Wife and two boys) immigrated to Canada in May,2006 but stay for only one month.Now they arrived again in April´2009.When they can apply for Health card,
(I have all ready Health card,and just completed 3 yrs stay. )
