Subject: employment in canada
Hi there, i need some advice here regarding employment possibilities in canada. I´ve put in my application for permanent residency and am now trying my luck applying for jobs via the internet, but have had no luck so far. In fact, an employer rejected my application downright. Is this because I´m still a foreigner and have not yet secured my PR status?
More importantly, I would like to know under what circumstances would a Canadian employer hire a foreigner? I read somewhere that the employer has to prove to the authorities that they are unable to (for some reason or another) fill the position with a local, before they can get approval to hire a foreigner. Is this true??

Thanks!

There are certain jobs which do not require HRSDC approval. If the job is not HRSDC exempt then your employer will have to first get the approval.

Listen mate canada honestly sucks .... yes you can find employment very easily but at a starbucks for 9 dollars an hour... I have made the biggest mistake by coming here, please for gods sake I am asking all the potential immigrants to listen to me carefully, yes canada is a beautiful place, yes canadians are not as racist as the Americans or Australians....But Canada needs immigrants because they are making money out of us !!!!!!! We all bring a lot of money into this country!!! Just multiply 10.000 CAD by 40.000 people and see how much comes into this country every year!!!! ...

If somehow you come here you will see all indians working as security guards at some banks or as taxi drivers, you can not find a single WHITE canadian driving a taxi, ...You cannot find a single WHITE man working in the kitchen cleaning dishes, that is the cheap labour that canadians let immigrants do !!!!

They accept you as a skilled worker but the employers here do not give any shit to your previous experience or education, ...This is ripping of immigrants , the canadian government accept you into the country as an engineer, or computer technician or a teacher BUT employers do not even reply your applications .. and you start over everything and keep on spending money !!!! That money is not canadian money but the money you saved hard in your own country !!!! You can NEVER NEVER NEVER save that money here !! ....

Many young people share apartments here because they cannot afford an apartment on their own, now ask yourself do people share apartments in your country ??? ...Just for a moment think over and over again, wherever you come from, your country could be poor, economy could be terrible but you STILL COULD save some money to come over to canada.. belive me mate you will never be able to save that money here !!!!

What about me then / What I am doing here , well I do not HAVE money to go back, and my children are at university working in their free time to earn their university fee !!! I have been here for four years belive me I could never earn more then 2200 a month, although Canadian government accepted me into the country as a skilled worker as an engineer !!!! and this with this money i am leading an animal life.... No movies, no eating out, my children and me go to second hand shops to buy our clothes... In my home country i used to wear my tie and go to work in my car, people used to show me respect!! Here the moment their here your accent or the moment they feel that you are foreigner, things change, belive me canadians are so nice that they never tell it to your face ....But they do not give you a job, or reply your application letters ...

Sorry canadians please no offence BUT I really regret coming here ... but everyone can make mistakes, I want you guys do not make the same mistake that this old man has made !!!!!

Knowledge is power.

When you surf the internet to find employment and the employer sees that your not even in Canada is an obstacle. To any employer if the employee does not having a car to get to and from work is an obstacle too.

Employers are busy and they or their HR department may not know what the requirements are to hire a foreign national or how simple it is for certain occupations to obtain a Labour Market Opinion so that the best applicant (THE FOREIGNER) can be hired.

If John would have researched his skills and employment requirements better and taken some responsibility for his decision he would be aware certain engineering positions are not in high demand.

From his posting if his children (plural) are in University so why does he think he should be any different to any other Canadian parent with two kids in University and having little funds to dine out. Germany and some other countries cover the costs of University education, Canada does not BUT should. John must be getting up in age and may be past his prime employment years but he is correct that certain companies prefer to hire applicants who have already worked in Canada as engineers.

Construction and Trades are extremely in high demand, some IT positions and if you search the net you can find lists of occupations that can be filled quite easily without too much hassle to the employer. See Nunu response.

Now that you are talking about employment for foreign nationals I have a question.

Does it make a difference to have a degree (like a MSc or PhD) from a CANADIAN UNIVERSITY ? would it increase the chances of being hired in Canada ?

Yes it does increase your chances to find a job if you have a degree from a Canadian University. People with foreign education credentials usually struggle a lot till they get Canadian experience or education.

John - have you looked at the tuition costs for your kids if they were foreign students rather than residents? Did you read the CIC website while you were waiting for you PR that talked about regulated professions?

If your life was so good at home, I am very confused why you would leave it?

Come to Alberta. There are lots of well payed jobs in the oilpatch. If you are single or dont mind being away from the family there are big bucks to be made in exploration and drilling. I have come across many foreign workers in my line of work. Jobs are easy to get and they hire without experience and prejudice. It is a tough way of life , but can certainly be a good way to get on your feet fast in Canada.
