Subject: Hypothetically speaking...marriage question |

Hello, I have been following these forums and it is really informative, but I have a question:
If Canada recognizes legal marriages of other countries...
1. what happens if a Muslim man is already legally married, has two children, but has been separated from them for years?
and
2. A Canadian woman goes to his country, legally marries him because in his country he is allowed up to 4 wives...
and then 3. sponsors him to come to Canada?
Would CIC recognize this legal marriage?
TIA for any comments on this...

(in reply to: Hypothetically speaking...marriage question) how I understand it...
on the mans application they will ask his marital status - he will be required to say ´married´ otherwise he is being fraudulent. Separated is not a category.
He will need to produce a divorce document to verify his status before you will be entitled to sponsor him. Once he is legally divorced, (by Canadian standards)you will need to be living common law for 1 year or be legally married before you can commence a sponsorship application.
Polygamy is illegal in Canada and therefore the option you are seeking would not be approved by CIC.
