Subject: Car hasn't been paid off - how can I import it ??
  Hello, everybody,

I recently received my PPR and plan to land in a few weeks. At the moment I am in the US. I have a car (2005 Toyota RAV4) which I plan to bring with me to Canada but it has not been paid off yet (the bank still owns it and holds the tile). Does anybody know how can I import such car to Canada?

I read a lot of posts regarding the car importing procedure but they all talk about steps involving car´s title. What if I do not have one (and would not have it for another few years)??? Is it still possible to bring my car to Canada and just "transfer" the lien or it has to be fully paid off before I can legally import it to Canada? Is there anybody who was in such situation? If so, could you please comment on this.

I called the bank but was unable to make it any further than the first line of customer support. According to them, they don´t allow to take cars outside the US for more than 30 days. In my case they suggested paying the car off immidiately or selling it. Do you think those are really my only options?

Do you think I should put the car on the "Goods to follow" list (since I do not have the title I can not (at least on paper) bring it right away)? How long can I drive such car (as "Good to follow" :-) in Canada before registering it? My impression is that I have 30-45 days to do the technical stuff (days lights and etc.) and 1 year to do the paperwork. Is that right? If I pay all taxes and fees in the US, how long car I drive the car in Canada with US licence plates without registering it? Could that be for a few years or there is a limit to that?

Even if somehow in the future I manage to get the title how can I export the car from the US? My US visa expires on September 7, 2006, so I won´t be able to go back and forth. Do you think, if, initially, I put the car on "Goods to follow" list and, later, when I get the title, just drive the car to US border post, have them stamp the title and go back to Canada that would work?

Sorry for asking so many questions. I am sure I am not the first one facing such problem. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Gregory

Well I guess your bank will not allow you before you finish all the payment for it. No way, i would suggest either selling it or keep it there until you finish paying for it and bring it later...

if car is not paid off, that does mean you are not the owner and for that reason you can not take the car where ever you want.

You need to pay off the car and only then you will be the owner of that car and export the car from US to Canada.

Good luck.
