What kind of visa does one need to do academic research (1yr) in Canada, if you´re not a Canadian citizen or affiliated to/ sponsored by a Canadian university?

Thanks for the prompt reply. However, a study permit seems inappropriate as I won´t be enrolled in a Canadian institution, and neither will I be working for one. (I am affiliated to a US university and need to live with/ study a community in Canada). Is there a research permit for such situations?
