Subject: How long does immigration process take
I am currently a graduate student in US but i want to know the duration of the higly skilled immigrant program in Canada. My industry is in Info systems, Network Admin, and Telecommunications and Sytem Managements, with 4 years work experience.

Assume i already qualify via minimum points how long does the process take from the application to completetion.

I got some info through aome unreliable sources that the process takes 4-5 years is this true? I perosnally dont think it is practicable. And i could not get clear answers from the canadian embassy website.

Cheers
Mayowa

Since you are legally admitted into US, you will file your application at Buffalo. For 30% cases, they finalize in 18 months. Thats the best case scenario.

For reference, people who applied in July - August 04 are still waiting for their passport request (for visa stamping).

As a thumb rule, given that you havent lived in way too many countries and not from a region that requires significant background check....consider 2 years from the date of your application (still much better than US process)!

Hi (in reply to: How long does immigration process take)
Hi Mayowa I guess there are many previous posts about immigration process times from Buffalo and those are real people and that will give you some ideas about process times so i highly recommend you to scan and read previous posts in this site,.. Just as an applicant I would also suggest you to read CIC site and submit all your files, language tests etc. complete with translations if required, you might shorten that time... Good luck ...

I would say 2 years if the application is clean.

Hi Mayowa ,

Expect it to take at least 18 months . I too filed from the US August last year and i´m still waiting . I emailed Buffalo today and got their standard response - "your case will be finalised early 2006 " . I had my interview waived . Background checks tend to take a while .

Regards
Olu

Between October 2004 to September 2005 a skilled worker immigration application from USA was processed in 18 to 36 months.

The times are "indicative". Your prelim. applicaion if all is OK will clear in about 12-15 months. This should take you to your medicals.

Now what may delay is:

1. If an interview is needed
2. Your Background check (These depend on what country you are from, and where you have lived).

Normally you should clear in 22-24 months time frame. However, do keep another 8 for any additional wait on the BG Checks.

For e.g. all my process formalities were cleared in Jan 2005. I have since been waiting on my BG checks to clear - it is been now about 9 months. An initial appox. given by CIC was 6-9 months for BG checks. I do hope the new year will bring me some luck.

However, many on this forum have asked me not to raise my hopes too much as they have known the BG checks to go on longer.

My advise is to not waste time if you are eligible and are thinking of applying - this is merely US $ 500 investment you are making for your future. Then file and forget for about 15-18 months!!
