Women, Africa top agenda for new head of WHO

The health of women and Africans are the top priorities for the World Health Organization, the agency´s new head said Thursday.

Margaret Chan, 59, is the first Chinese to head a United Nations body. The 192 members of the organization elected her as director-general last November following the death of Lee Jong-wook of South Korea.

"I want my leadership to be judged by the impact of our work on the health of two populations: women and the people of Africa," Chan said in a statement.

Women face health problems because of possible risks during pregnancy and childbirth, Chan told WHO staff members in a speech.

Africa faces killers such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, as well as chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

She also listed six core areas for the agency to focus on:

* Development for health.
* Health security to detect emerging diseases such as avian flu.
* Health systems capacity.
* Information and knowledge.
* Enhancing partnerships.
* Improving the performance of the organization.

When she was nominated, Chan stressed she was not serving the interests of Hong Kong or China, but was impartial and would be serving the world´s interests.

In 1997, during Hong Kong´s first outbreak of the dangerous H5N1 avian flu virus, Chan ordered the destruction of all domestic poultry in Hong Kong ? an estimated 1.5 million birds ? to eliminate the source of the virus.

Chan was also a public health official in Hong Kong when the city was hit by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003. The virus led to the deaths of 800 people worldwide.

Chan received her medical degree at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ont., after following her husband, David, to the Canadian school from their home in Hong Kong. She also earned a degree in home economics from Western´s Brescia University College.

WHO has a two-year budget of $3.3 billion US.

She is just a puppet supported by the Chinese gov´t to get this position.

She´s got condemned by the Hong Kong public in 2003.

Her former boss, Yeoh Eng-kiong, got fired after the SARS outbreak.
