Osgoode Ranked Number One Law School in Canada

TORONTO, January 11, 2006 ?V Osgoode Hall Law School of York University has been ranked the Number One law school in Canada in Canadian Lawyer magazine??s 2006 Law School Survey. It is the first time that Osgoode has taken top honours in the annual survey, moving up from fourth place last year.

Osgoode Dean Patrick Monahan said the survey results confirm that major improvements made to the Law School??s program over the last five years have had a beneficial impact on students. Those improvements include recruiting outstanding new faculty, renovating Osgoode??s facilities and making good academic use of the latest forms of information technology.

??I am particularly delighted that 100 per cent of our recent alumni who responded to this survey indicated that they would recommend Osgoode to a prospective law student,?? Monahan said. ??That is a magnificent vote of confidence in the dedication and responsiveness of our faculty and staff.??

Almost 500 recent Canadian law school graduates, who have been called to the bar within the last five years, responded to the survey, which ranked their alma maters in seven categories: quality of curriculum; quality of law faculty; percentage of caring and competent professors; quality of fellow students admitted; standards of testing; adequacy of facilities; and relevance of their education to their actual law practice. Respondents also commented on tuition increases, student aid, and the need for more practical, hands-on training at 15 of the 19 law schools across the country.

Monahan said that since news of Osgoode??s top ranking was circulated to the Law School??s alumni earlier this week he has been inundated with e-mail messages from alumni ??expressing pride in these results and remarking that this recognition is long overdue.??

Celebration with Osgoode Community

To say thank you to the members of the Osgoode community including alumni, Monahan said the Law School will host a celebration in its Moot Court Room on Tuesday, January 17 from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m. that will include a special presentation from Canadian Lawyer??s publisher Karen Lorimer and editor Patricia Chisholm; a commemorative gift for the first 150 attendees; and a draw for a pair of Leafs tickets and a Leafs jersey, courtesy of the Osgoode Alumni Association.

Osgoode Hall Law School is the largest common-law law school in Canada with a proud history of more than 100 years of leadership and innovation in legal education and legal scholarship. A total of about 900 students are enrolled in Osgoode??s three-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Program. Osgoode??s Graduate Program in Law is also the largest in the country and one of the most highly regarded in North America. The Osgoode Professional Development Program, which operates out of its own centre in downtown Toronto, offers numerous specialized part-time LLM Programs that run on varying cycles as well as Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses.

Wow, this is old news.

Osgoode is a good school and I´ll go there if I can´t make the cut for UofT Law.

First, who´s calling it #1? A magazine. It´s the top comprehensive but so what? I don´t want to be a "comprehensive" lawyer.

Second, UofT Law has the toughest admission standards in the country. It´s as hard to get into as a medical school. Osgoode isn´t. UofT puts 50% of its grads on Bay St and has the highest starting salaries and student intern salaries (they better, they have the highest tuition in Ontario). Osgoode has lower starting salaries than other Ontario law schools, maybe because it attracts more holistic students. It also puts 25% of grads on Bay St but that´s not high when you consider Queens and Western(!) do almost as much and they´re not even in the same city.

Third, why would you care about law school at all since you obviously know nothing about it? Face it, Osgoode is the safety school for UofT law applicants.

That said, I have no problem recognizing Osgoode as the best comprehensive law school. If would be an attractive choice if I didn´t know what I wanted to study.

A lot of ignorance on this board.

Go on any law school discussion forum and EVERYBODY knows UofT is the best. Seriously, go check. It´s the only school people consider to be comparable to top U.S. law schools.

Osgoode is a great school though, don´t get me wrong.

lol yeahhhhh, i´m gonna go take the opinions of a friggin internet forum rather than a reputable publication such as Canadian Lawyer Magazine. right...

Osgoode is the best in Canada, how anyone can argue that UofT law is even close to being the best (or even second best) is beyond me.

You know what´s crazy? McGill law school costs less than I pay for one years tuition for undergrad in Ontario. UofT law school is like 22K a year.
