Subject: My opinion to MaClean's rankings
Maclean´s magazine has once again released its Canadian university rankings. Various objections have been mounted against this publication.

This change in rankings could be acceptable if rankings are merely based on how each school is perceived by the public. A valuable tool for students should go beyond perception and reputation though. Maclean´s claims their rankings are constructed with many different sets of data, that´s why U of T going from 1st to 3rd is so conspicuous. Universities in this category are generally very large institutions. For a school of this size to lose the corresponding amount of "quality" from dropping two spots in one year after 11 years at number one is absurd. Did they massively cut their budget overnight? Did the library lose a substantial number of books in a natural disaster? I doubt it. Did the tools used to construct the rankings such as amount of research money awarded change? More than likely. That is to say, the measures used are susceptible to political and organizational change without equating to actual change in the quality of a school.

It seems as though it is some sort of "top-down" bias. Changes in university governance and policy and in the external pieces of data (usually from large bureaucratic agencies) are amplified while the organic, in the community factors are muted.

(ps. I´m a McGill alum so my personal investment in critisizing Toronto´s drop is based on my belief that publications like this are basically useless)

The funny thing is that UofT attracted 11% more research funds than the previous year while McGill lost 22%. There really is no real reason why UofT dropped out of first except for the fact that they started a boycott agains the people in charge of the ranking!

what a bunch of sore losers! kids, just accept the defeat. McGill is ranked number 1, Queen´s number 2 and your beloved UofT is ranked 3rd. swallow it and shut the hell up.

that´s funny you cite Research Infosource. last year McGill destroyed UofT in that ranking yet it still tied for first in Maclean´s, what´s your point?

Unforunately for McGill, even if they´re ranked no.1 for the next 12 years, UofT is still considered the best in Canadian´s eyes.

A huge chunck of Macleans rankings is based on "Average Entering Grade" and "Reputation."

11 Simon Fraser 85.5
12 Toronto 85.1
13 Mount Allison 84.9
14 Bishop´s 84.8

actually, McGill consistently tops the "highest quality" category in the reputation survey. Waterloo gets the best overall reputation almost every year. And let´s not forget McGill is pretty much the only Canadian university internationals know about. Pity, UofT doesn´t have much of a reputation at home or abroad. And now it´s in 3rd place...

bwahahaha
