Subject: Why do you hate York?
You all must have one time or another come across those U of T students who harbour such a distain for York University. It completely amazes me how much effort they put into such things by buying and printing shirts with statements such as "if you can use a fork you can go to York". Now one has to ask themselves why anyone would go to such lengths to put down another university. It can only be simply explained by the fact U of T fears York University and its huge potential to take the spotlight away from them since we do after all share the same GTA. This hatred U of T has had for York existed from the pre-birth and birth of York University. When the city decided that Toronto required a new University to service the community, U of T attempted to do everything it could to block the existence of York University. It only succeeded in so much as having the location being chosen being north of the city. Much of the property York University initial began with such as Glendon campus belonged to U of T. Now it seems that the hate continues to unravel for over 50 years as new generations of students are being taught by their previous generations to hate York as much as possible. Nevertheless York University with all the hatred directed towards it has been able to establish itself in several different disciplines and out perform U of T which is an institution that has had several hundred years more then York University to make its mark. York University is the leader in Business, Law, Psychology, Political Science, and Kinesiology and much of the Arts programs. It is only a matter of time before York will excel in engineering and the medical fields which U of T currently holds the best ranks for.

Actually, OP has a point. If UofT is such a great school, why would UofT students need to bash York? You don´t see McGill students bash Concordia ...

What I´ve read from above, Yorkie do have a point there.

Would Mercedes bash Hyundai?? Just Honda bashes Toyota.

Would McGIll bash Concordia?? Would UBC bash SFU??

UofT students really have the inferiority complex. They are very insecure!!

I do believe Mercedes employee look down at hyundai employee, but not direct brand competition.

This is the same as UofT and York.

York students are just too fustrated that we UofT students make fun from their expense.

Original poster is wrong on the origins of York.

There was a need for another university in the GTA so the province funded one. Part of the reason many profs wanted a new school was because of the theological restrictions for most UofT colleges at the time. Some colleges would only take Christian students of certain denominations (Trinity, St. Mike´s) and there was a feeling that Jewish (in particular) applicants were being discriminated against because they didn´t have as many options as other students. UofT (and McMaster) asked the province for the cash to just expand their campuses but the province opted for a new school due to public pressure. All that denominal bullshit lasted at UofT until the end of the 60s.

As for the t-shirts slamming York, we really don´t put much thought into them. You can buy them at the UofT Bookstore cheaper than school shirts because they are poorly made. Most students who get one got it during frosh week, and don´t try telling me York´s frosh week doesn´t make fun of UofT.... they still do at Carleton´s frosh and it´s not like UofTers have t-shirts about that school.

One more thing, what´s this alleged "50 years of hate" between York and UofT? UofT grads don´t hate York grads. We hire plenty of them.

McGill doesn´t bash Concordia becuase they are quite equal in their quality of students.

No, you are wrong.

1. There was a need to build a 2nd universiy in Toronto as the demand rose in the late 50s.

2. UofT didn´t want to grow larger because the population size would deterioate the student quality. (no kidding)

3. The founder of York wanted to educate the adults who missed their university education for whatever reasons.

4. York partnered with YMCA and have the night classes.

That´s why Atkinson still alive today even with tight budget.

I don´t disagree with those reasons, because there are multiple reasons. Having a non-denominational school with easier access was a big deal to the Jewish community in Toronto.
