Desmarais Building to mark strong family ties to uOttawa
OTTAWA, August 15, 2006 ?X Mr. Paul G. Desmarais, a renowned Canadian and international businessman and alumnus of the University of Ottawa will see his and his family??s contributions to the University recognized with the naming of the Desmarais Building, a new flagship building for Canada??s university.

??The University of Ottawa has always been at the very heart of the education of the Desmarais family. My late father, my wife Jacqueline, my siblings and myself are proud alumni of the University and some of my grandchildren are currently attending the University.?? said Mr. Desmarais.

??We are proud to recognize the contributions of Mr. Paul G. Desmarais and Mrs. Jacqueline Desmarais to the University and to Canada in this very tangible way?? said President Gilles Patry.

The naming marks a contribution of $15 million to the ??Campaign for Canada??s university?? University of Ottawa by Mr. Paul G. Desmarais, who is one of Canada??s most successful businessmen, as well as an honorary co-chair of the Campaign for Canada??s university.

The impressive 12-storey, 23,000 m2 building is designed by the award-winning architectural firm Moriyama and Associates of Toronto, and will serve as the home of the University of Ottawa??s School of Management and Faculty of Social Sciences. The building is located on a parcel of land bounded by Laurier Avenue, Nicholas Street, and Waller Street.

With this significant donation, the University has achieved more than 90 per cent of the $200-million goal of its major fundraising campaign, the largest ever in the history of the National Capital Region.
