Subject: Another school vs. school question.
Future Arts (and eventually Law, hopefully) student here. I applied for a whole bunch of schools this year and now that decision time (June 15th) is fast approaching. I´ve narrowed it down to UBC and McGill. Now, the story behind this is that I applied to McGill without any expectations of being accepted, didn´t think my marks (I´m from Toronto by the way) were gonna be high enough, so by default, UBC became my top choice and I sorta relegated McGill to the back of my mind. Well lo and behold, I come home yesterday and find out that McGill has accepted me, but after going to the UBC welcome session and talking to a lot of the students there, taking McGill over UBC isn´t such an obvious choice anymore. Now I plan on either going to McGill or UofT for Law school but that´s in four years so ignore that little tidbit for now.

I know that reputation wise McGill is seen as better then UBC, nationally and internationally. I also know that Montreal has a better public transit system (very important since I won´t be getting a car anytime soon) and a cheaper city to live in. The only thing I´m really worried about is how my French handicap will affect me when I´m looking for a job in Montreal, I can read and write French pretty well, for someone who hasn´t taken French in five years, but I´m absolutely awful at speaking it. I´ve heard bad things about McGill´s deferred maintenance and I also hear that the proffesors tend to hand their classes over to grad students to teach.

UBC on the other hand, is located near a beach (or at least my dorm is) and Vancouver seems like a more laid back city (seems like that everywhere on the west coast). I went to their welcome session I came out of it with a pretty positive outlook and my friend who just finished first year there has said nothing but good things about it.

So I have a tough decision to make. Comments anyone?

btw if you are doing law school in the east anyway, why not experience west while you can?
BA undergrads from U of T/McGill/UBC are regarded the same when applying for domestic law schools IMO.
