A team from Montreal´s John Molson School of Business emerged victorious in the 25th annual International MBA Case Competition at Concordia University on Saturday night.

"We knew we had what it takes, but we also knew it was really competitive," John Molson team member Ivan Soltero said yesterday.

It was the second time in three years the home-town team from Concordia´s John Molson business school has won the challenge. The five-person team will now enjoy the spoils of victory, which include a $10,000 bursary donated by Export Development Canada, and the Concordia Cup, which the Molson school reclaimed from the University of Calgary´s Haskayne School of Business, winners in 2005.

"It´s incredibly prestigious," said lead student organizer Anouk Bertner. "There was some very strong competition this year."

More than 200 students took part in the competition, representing 36 universities from as far away as China, India and Nigeria.

The competition began on Tuesday, with teams working flat-out to develop strategies and solutions for real-life "cases" based on actual companies, from Cirque du Soleil to U.S. consumer-products firm Spectrum Brands. The teams delivered 25-minute presentations to a panel of judges composed of executives from leading local corporations, with a range of business backgrounds including finance, strategy and human resources. Points were awarded based on the students´ ability to analyze key issues, present an action plan with various options, and comment on the pros and cons of their proposed strategies.

In the final on Saturday, the John Molson team faced off over a 30-page case study against Universitat Munster and HEC Montreal.

Mr. Soltero and team member Jason Nelson put their victory down to teamwork and trusting each other´s judgment.

The winning team showed they had a good grasp of the importance of the content of their findings over the style of their presentation, said Dr. Arvind Joshi, chairman of the competition´s advisory board. But he also said any one of the teams in the competition could have won. "It´s a tough competition," he said. "MBAs by their nature tend to be very competitive."

As well as giving students a chance to show off their business skills under pressure, the competition provides an opportunity for students to mix with sponsors and fellow students from around the world, said Dr. Joshi.

"The case studies are a very good learning experience, but sometimes, I think the best learning comes in the social activities," he said.

In second place, the HEC team took home a bursary of $7,000, while the German team won third place and $5,000. The Indian Institute of Management team, from Bangalore, was eliminated in fourth place in the semi-final on Friday and won $3,000.

IN THE NEXT FINANCIAL POST:

Rumors continue to swirl over the alleged fixing of the International MBA Case Competition by Concordian University organizers.

"Zhat vas impozzible, ve had ze best idearen!" complained Rudolf Schwep, head of the Universitat Munster´s team. "Das Concordzans solution to everything vas insults and unkraut [marijuana]. Ve even helped them read ze instructions - and they ver in englisch!"

Calls made to Concordian administration officials at both the university and the local crack house were not returned as of Monday evening. A self-addressed stamped envelope left with the John Molson business school´s receptionist was later returned with a cheque for the dean´s phone bill.

Prior to the competition, Valery Fabricant, infamous Concordling diplomat and Internet troll, was quoted as saying: "We will rule Canada and the world by our tricks ! ! [09-12-2005,03:10]"

What absolute BS.

´Rudolf Schwep´? That name is Jewish, not German.

Do you honestly expect this forum to believe Concordia would allow a Jewish person onto their campus? The CSU would launch another intifada.

Spinboy has some serious personal issues with concordia. I think it is best that concordia students ignore him entirely. The fact that he knows so much about the CSU (of the past) and the whole fabrikant affair is very disturbing.

Is that you, Val? Glad to see you made it through another set of exams without being caught cheating.

I´ve got nothing at all against Concordia. I think it´s great that there´s an institution in Montreal devoted to keeping the at-risk off the street.

And please don´t assume I wrote the second article in this thread. Any concerns the German team had about the fairness of the competition is between them and Concordia.
