Subject: Who should take IELTS?
  Friends,

I came across an interesting case. A guy (X) started living (and studying) in Canada since he was 12 years old and graduated this year. For some reason, his parents preferred not to apply for PR and continue living in Canada with work permit from the beginning.

Recently, X applied for immigration and CIC has asked him to take IELTS !!!

About native speakers in the UK - that´s rubbish. If they have done all their education in English and are in the UK and their parents are English, they never have to do the test, and I would be highly, highly surprised if anyone has really been asked to do so. Prove it!

I had to give the IETLS too and I speak hinglish :)

Plus for graduate school in the US I gave the TOEFL, GRE ( has an English component) and the ELPE (English Language Proficiency exam) for a teaching assistant job at the university.

Now if Iam asked for one more English exam, thats it.... Iam going to..&%$@@@$..take it :)

Doughnuts - but where are you from originally? You might have done a Master´s in the US but that doesn´t mean anything as there are some people in that position who have terrible English. If you have done elementary and secondary education in English you don´t have to take it. I do feel sorry for you having to take so many exams though!

To njk- Iam an Indian. My education so far has always been in English, though my native language is different.Part of my primary education was in South Africa, where the medium for education was English. With regards to the IELTS, for those fluent in English, the only hassle I guess is the time and money. But I have heard of others who got letters from their American profs. or employers to bypass the IELTS. I took the academic IELTS just in case I had to do further education in Canada. I hope to kill two birds with one stone :)

I think it´s like this: if you´re English, period, you will never get asked. If you´re not, but have done some schooling etc. in English, you might get lucky and bypass IELTS. If you´re not English at all and have no proof of it, you will certainly get asked. :-)

By the way, are you 100% sure the academic IELTS is okay with the CIC? I´ve heard other people ask and the answer has always been that you have to do the general one and that the academic one isn´t accepted. Which is stupid, but perhaps true...

You just need the general IELTS for immigration. I took the academic IELTS and CIC is okay with it. On my CAIPS notes, there is a line that states- "Candidate has very good english" :) :) That sure is an odd statement.
