Subject: Settlement funds
  Hi

I recd my landing papers and am planning to move over to Canada shortly. Can somebody clarify the following:

1. I have a job offer but it is not HRSDC approved. If I were to show this offer letter at the port of entry, will I be exempted from showing the proof of settlement funds?

2. Which will be the cheap airlines from India (Madras) to Calgary.

3. Will I be eligible for Alberta Health Medical Care Insurance from the day I land

4. What will be the cost of two bedroom apartment in Calgary?

5. Which part of Calgary would be a nice place to settle down with two kids aged 5 and 10.

2 Bedroom Aparment in Calgary will be from $600 to $1000. There are some less than great neigbourhoods in the Eastern Part of Calgary, but the city is quite wealthy and nice.

Lots of residential areas in the south, south west, and north and north west. There is a light rail system know as the C train, and its nice to be near that if you dont have a car.

The downtown core is actually pretty nice, and some families live their. Many apartments are being built by the river downtown, and many professionals live down there, but most with families prefer the suburbs.

The city is in quadrants so the addresses are easy to find.

Like I said, the only crappy areas are in the east of the city.

Good luck.

Pushpa,

This website will be a great resource. Use mapquest or another street map internet program to orient yourself, and you should get a good idea of the rental situation in Calgary:

Pushpa,

Read your background in your last posting, you have everything to sail thru the immigration process, what amazes me people like you go in for consultants, sheer waste of money and lack of self confidence. Anyway good luck to you, Calgary is a nice place to live.

Yes you will have to prove your settlement funds at the port of entry. You could let the landing officer know that you have already secured a job offer, but you will still need to provide at least the minimum $ value.

You would have needed to submit any information about your job offer and arranged for HRSDC approval during the application process.

Pushpa,

I am sure the North East is fine... make sure you are not right by the airport though, and you should really spend time looking at the neighbourhood and the schools around any apartment you wish to buy.

Calgary has lots of parks, bike trails, and other such things so no matter where you live, its a safe and enjoyable city for adults and kids.

Have fun (and dress warm!)

Dave
