Subject: US going to Canada
  Hello everyone,
I live in Michigan and my boyfriend lives in Vancouver. We´re getting ready to
apply as the conjugal partner catagory. I think we have meet all the
requirements but so scaried of being rejected. I´m not really sure what
my question really is, I guess I´m just wondering if anyone one else
has come from US to Canada under this catagory if they could tell me
what to expect, how long it normally takes to be approved, how long
before I can apply for a job, what they are looking for from us. We
haven´t been able to live together since he´s there and I´m here. He
did once apply for a job in MA.USA but didn´t get it because they (MA)
screwed up his visa and if he would of excepted the way it was he would
of been deported.
Thank you all for sharing your stories I have been reading them and
apply what I think applies to us.
Monica

Conjugal partner is usually only for people who cannot be together because of e.g. political reasons. I don´t know that being from the US counts, because there are always ways to come to Canada e.g. study, mutual work agreements, working holiday visa, and to go to the US from Canada. I doubt he will be able to prove he didn´t get the job because of some US immigration official´s fault. How long have you been together with proof? How old are you both? Can you prove that something is stopping you from moving? Easiest way to be together: get married, move to Canada and apply for PR - it takes about 8 months and you can´t work but you can be together. You can always try and if you get it, well done. Let us know how it goes!

By the way, you´re looking at a wait of 8-17 months (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/times-int/05-fc-spouses.html - see Buffalo), and a cost of around $1500 CAN if you do the conjugal route instead of the spousal in Canada one (def. shouldn´t be mroe than a year´s wait in the latter case).

I´m 39 and he is 45. We have been doing the visiting back and forth. The reason we could live together before was work, and I was having a surgery that need to be taken care of. We have been together for a year and know each other for 4 years. I dont understand what you were saying about the 8 months, it would take 8 months to be approved and once there I cant work or it will take 8 months before I can work? And I am in love with him and I will be moving to be with him some way some how

It would take 8 months to be approved and about another month for you to get the work permit and start work.

Try britishexpats.com/forum in the Canadian immigration forum (not just for Brits) but in your case I think the only way to be with him is to marry him. I´m not sure your reasons for not being together would be counted as conjugal is uncommon and hard to get but see what the people on that forum think!

you can apply as conjugal parter without marriage if you lived (and can prove it) togather for at least 12 months, in this case the waiting time would be the same as if you got married.
it´s usually quick this way (8 months) and once done you will be a canadia PR with full rights as any canadian, in the mean time you can move and live in Canada as a visitor with no right to work, unless you find a job and obtain a work permit.
good luck

if you lived together for 12 months that would be applying as COMMON LAW. Conjugal is for those who cannot meet the 12 month requirement and can prove they cannot get married.

No ejspet Is correct there Common Law you need to have lived together but Conjugal you do not. Its right here Who can be sponsored as your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner?

Definitions:
Spouse: A person is of the opposite sex, 16 years of age or older and married to you. The marriage must have been legally recognized in the country where it took place and in Canada.
Common-law partner: A person is of the opposite or same sex, has cohabited in a conjugal relationship with you for a period of at lest one year and is still cohabiting with you.
Conjugal partner: A person residing outside Canada and you have maintained with this person a conjugal relationship for at least one year, but you have not cohabited with him/her. NB: If your sponsorship is successful, your conjugal partner becomes a permanent resident of Canada but cannot exercise any rights or privileges associated with common-law status until you have cohabited for at least one year.
