Subject: It is not worth it.....
This is just an eye-opener for those who have a stable job in their home countries or their standard of living in not bad.
Every single work I have applied for in Vancouver is on an on-call basis which I find absolutely ridiculous because the place your name in an on-call relief staff. Well if you have 5 or6 persons before you, the segnority basis is more important than your own merits. I have nothing against unions and I do support them, but in like every system you get all these lazy bugs who do not want to work but the are protected by the union so litteraly they can do whaatever they want.
The process of getting a job is also frustrating: You send your resumes and if you are lucky to get a call-back this happens within a month or at least 2 weeks. After this you go for an interview and it takes between 2 or 3 weekes more if you get hired for the lazy supervisor to give you trainnig... After this wait to see if your phone rings. Mine just rings in sunny days , holidays and all those days the lazy bugs do not want to work.
To wrap it all up the more I know this country the more dissappointed I get. I still do not give up, though my banking account is starting to give up.

Hi Desperate.

Have you thought of moving to Calgary? There are "Help Wanted" signs in many windows, with numerous/most industries experiencing some degree of labour shortage.

BTW: What is your occupation?

that is why CIC tells you that you must have settlement money. that is how it works in north america for most employment.

I think the statement..."it is not worth it" is subjective...it really depends upon the person. I hope you will consider exporing all the possibilities like changing city/province or maybe even changing career before you really quit....or better yet do not even include quitting among your options....anywhere you go, life is really hard.

I just suddenly thought about the movie "Finding Nemo"...towards the last part when Nemo and Dory were motivating the fish to keep on swimming down to be able to escape from the fishermen´s net.....Dory was singing...JUST KEEP SWIMMING...JUST KEEP SWIMMING....we can all get strength from that.....JUST KEEP SWIMMING...you´ll get there....goodluck to you and us all... :)

Thank you guys for all your support.
For Sharon:: Well I do not know if in most part of North America things work the way the work in Vancouver, I used to live in Florida and I had never experienced what I am experiencing in this city.

Desparate,
You have made a conscious decision to move to Canada I presume so do not fret, but keep working at it.
The general thumb rule is : What immigrants can do in Canada, they can do it better in the USA..... except bitching about current situation ofcourse !!

Seriously! Have you thought of moving to where the work is?!? Canada is a very diverse nation, offering a multitude of climates, cultures, and challenges. More importantly, every region pretty-much stands on its own, economically (provincial equalization payments, etc. aside).

Perhaps like you, I preferred living in Vancouver, with its true cosmopolitan feel and liberal beliefs. But I do not regret the decision my wife and I made to move to Calgary (actually, I never wanted to leave the west coast, but after experiencing one of Calgary´s Chinooks, I convinced myself that I could survive a prairie winter - the jury´s still out on that one).

Calgary is safe, relatively friendly (for a city of one million), and offers lots of opportunity for those wanting to work. Edmonton and Red Deer are thriving, as well, although, Edmonton´s crime rates are not nearly as low as Calgary (but then they don´t have the paramilitary unit that is the CPS!!!LMAO)

If I was younger and unemployed/underemployed (read as "underpaid") and without "dependants", I would probably buy a truck and camper, and move my ass to the tar sands. If nothing else, there´s always the Fort Mac "minimum wage" jobs (around $12 to $14 per hour at McDonald´s, 7/11, etc.).

Thought: Actually, I did do something like this when I was younger. I moved from Victoria to McKenzie BC to work in a sawmill...LOL (it´s a fact; in 1989, I was making $20.00 an hour as a labourer in the mills; i put on 20 lbs in the first few months, and made alot of friends in the first few weeks).

Anyway, I hope you can see my point. Somewhere, Canada is in need of your skills; but maybe just not in Vancouver...

Best of luck

Immigration to Canada a frustrating scam lie (in reply to: It is not worth it.....)
Canada only needs large numbers of fresh foreign workers and immigrants to keep its economy functional. They go there to join the local Canadians in depression, frustration, and anger. Canada does not want you, only want your money and assets. You can stay home. The economy and society is dysfunctional as there are not enough jobs for all the people. Many locals and others end up working and living below their pay and level just to barely survive. All of Canada is bad but some regions like Victoria, British Columbia are worse. They don´t hire even if they need workers. No employers in Canada even hire anyone, unless you happen to be connected to a high power person. Merit, education, experience is irrelevant. Employers play job hiring time wasting games with everyone. Read comments from others on www.ratemyemployer.ca, www.topix.com (Victoria, BC, Canada sections), Yahoo Answers, Better Business Bureaus, "Why Some Immigrants Leave Canada", etc.
