Subject: Proof of funds and duties |
I will be landing soon in Canada.
If I am bringing 4000 Can$ above the required funds...will ther be any tax/duty on this? What is the limit for personal belongings without duties.
Thanks
Florian

(in reply to: Proof of funds and duties) You can not carry more that CAN$10K with you during landing. Any excess should be transfered prior to landing.
No taxes on landed immigrants

(in reply to: Proof of funds and duties) Are you sure there is a restriction on the amount you can carry? I think you were free to carry as much as you wanted - only you had to declare any amount over $10,000

(in reply to: Proof of funds and duties) You do not need to transfer funds greater than the 10K required by CIC. You just have to declare that you have more than 10K and the officer will ask you to show it to them.

(in reply to: Proof of funds and duties) there is no restriction on the amount you can bring with you, and -- to my knowledge -- there is no duty on it? Why would there be? Canada, like all countries, wants foreign money, as much of it as possible.
If you enter Canada with more than $10,000 you must declare it and fill out some forms. The sole purpose of the law is to help control international money laundering and drug trafficing. If you carry large amounts of cash into a country, you have to document where the money came from etc. The $10,000 is not meant to discourage legitimate money from coming into the country, and it is absolutely not illegal to bring in more. You just have to declare it and be able to explain where it comes from and how you got it.
