search for Canada, immigration, interview, questions on Google.

I believe I had seen a web-site with a list of question database.

These were rather general questions about you, your work and how you are planning to fit in Canada (in general why?)

Not to worry if you can speak and write English and are present as confident then you are OK.

This experience was posted on www.immigration.ca discussion forum.

Hi folks,

I would like to share my interview experience with all the people out here. I was scheduled for an immigrant interview at 11 am on September 7, 2005. When I arrived at the location, the gentleman at front desk asked me for the documents and interview letter. I handed him that. When I inquired if my wife needed to go through the interview (as she was more inclined on shopping downstairs and didn?t want to waste time waiting for the interview) he was surprised and asked me twice if I was married. I responded in affirmative and told him that I sent my marriage certificate couple of months back. He sifted through my file and without mentioning anything gave me an application for permanent residence for my wife. I informed him that I brought her background declaration and additional family information forms, which he accepted. At this point I had all the weird questions coming to my mind. It was imminent that my wife will be either a making or breaking factor in my interview. The wait seemed a little longer than expected. They called me in for an interview about an hour later than the scheduled time. When the immigration officer asked me to walk in with her to her office, I asked if my wife needed to accompany me, to which she replied in positive.

Before the interview could start the immigration officer gave us two options. 1) My wife could accompany me to Canada. In that case I would have to pay CD$ 550 for her application and CD$975 for her landing fee apart from her medical and FBI clearance; or 2) My wife could be a non-accompanying dependent and get her FBI clearance and medicals done without paying the application and landing fee. I explained to her the reason that since my wife is a US citizen and she is currently completing her education in the US, it would be useless for her to apply for immigration, plus she can go to Canada more easily as a US citizen. So we opted for the second option.

Then she pointed out that although my points were more than the required, some points were ambiguous based on the proof provided (there was no birth certificate for my dad and uncle showing their common father, as in British India no such birth certificates were issued). She said she would look into the ambiguities only if I was short of points, and those points were critical for my application, otherwise she would over look them. Her basic aim was to determine my points for work experience. I had held several jobs during my education which she would not consider. Together they made more than 3 years (some engineering related some not). My full time work was less than 1 year. She evaluated all those and cross questioned me about my job duties, my current safety-engineering field job, its relation to engineering, my areas of expertise etc. Then she mentioned that I was short of one year but she would give me benefit of doubt, which she did. She asked for my French language proficiency. Since I had flunked the TEF, the reason I gave to her that I took French language diploma 8 years ago and never had the opportunity to speak French. She then informed me that I was short of a few points and would be needing proof of relatives. I showed her stamped envelopes from my uncle (who has the same last name as mine), also my uncle?s immigration forms which mentioned my dad?s name as the closed relative (brother), also both their passport copies mentioning my grand dad?s name as their father. She accepted those and informed me that I had the required points and would make an excellent immigrant.

After that she gave me her business card, asked my wife to send her medical examination, FBI clearance and additional proof of funds since now CD$12,400 are required for two people instead of the CD$9,000 that I had shown. The whole process was very ?peaceful? and in an extremely friendly atmosphere. At the time of our departure my wife and the immigration officer were exchanging views on the location of her office.

I am not sure how much more time will it take before I get my immigration visa, but the visa officer told me that I had the chance to land on or before July, 2006, which is when my medical expires. Please let me know if you guys have any questions, I apologize for being too elaborate about my experience.

Thanks,
Jehanzeb
