Subject: Post graduated employment program
Most of you know about that this topic is for the people who graduate from Universities in Canada.

I am really confused as to when the first day of the 90 days starts. I did my last course for my degree in summer ´05. As my last course was a project, there was no specific date when I should complete the project. I completed that in the middle of summer rather than wait till the end of summer. My question is,

Is first day of the 90 days flexible, or can I consider the end of summer as the first day, or the date that appears on the degree-completion letter is the first day (I haven´t requested this letter yet).

When I apply for work-permit what does the immigration officer look for regarding this first day.

Please let me know, as your help is very much needed.

I think when you apply for work permit, you need to mention that you have already completed your studies and your 90 days will be counted from the day your work permit is issued.

Thanks Kool. But unfortunately, work permit is issued only when we have a job offer, and we have to get the work permit in 90 days.

Can anybody help?

I asked the same questions in 2004 before applying for post graduate employment work permit. The international student´s office in the university mentioned that the 90 days start from the date mentioned in the letter from faculty of graduate studies that state that you have completed all the requirements for the degree and not the date of graduation.

So Pillai can you tell me how the letter looks like. For example, if I request the letter today, and in their letter they have a date on the top, is that the first day, or if they give the letter on Sep 8th, there might be a date inside the contents which tells this student has completed the studies on July 15th. Pretty complicated question, but plz help me.

The letter looks like this - At the top there is the date when the letter was issued. "This is to certify that that Mr. X was a full time (degree program name goes here) student in the (department name) in Faculty of (faculty name) at (university name). Mr. X has completed his/her coursework and (project/thesis/any other requirements go here) as outlined by Faculty of (faculty name - engineering or science or which ever faculty)

Mr. X has therefore fulfilled all the requirements of his/her programme and will graduate with (masters or phd and whichever degree) in (Month Year)

And any additions to the letter goes here

Try contacting faculty of grad studies. In my case, they had a standard template for this. They might have one. For example the date of the letter was a month earlier than the actual month of graduation and the 90 days is supposed to start from that date, than the date of graduation as far as i understand.

Pillai, thats excellent, I wouldn´t have asked for any better answer than the one which you gave. Thanks a lot.

I called my University, and in fact, it was Office of Registrar, and there is a person for each faculty, and I was told to contact the person incharge of my faculty.

So in your case, did the 90 days start from the date that was printed on top of the letter (when it was issued?).

Thanks in advance Pillai

My case is different, i had an incampus permanent job in the university as unix system administrator since 2003, it used to be halftime. I applied as soon as i got the letter from the faculty of grad studies as my job became fulltime by that time, the permit was issued for one year in 2004. It was renewed for one extra year till late 2006, this year. The letter was dated on september, permit was issued on october and the permit starts from the day it is issued. So i had upto end of november if i had to find a job. I continued my work while waiting for permit, as it was in campus. But for an out of the campus job,
it should start on or after the date work permit is issued.

My 90 day clock began ticking the day I graduated and received my diploma - the convocation ceremony. Now whenever i get a letter from my Uni for proof of education, it always states that I graduated on XX/XX/XXXX. The date of my convocation ceremony.

Thanks again Pillai.

I am searching for a job right now. I want to request for the letter only when I get a job, what do you want to advise me?

It depends on the university policies. Some universities are strict on these things and might mention the exact date when you finished your requirements and also the date of graduation. I assume you intend to graduate with october convocation. So there might a bit of flexibility as far as time is concerned when asking for the letter. Again immigration people are aware of the fact that the requirements of the degree are completed much before the actual graduation date. To get a definite answer, you should contact the international students office in the university. When i asked the question, they mentioned that 90 days start from the date mentioned in the letter.

I know a friend of mine who managed to get a job as an RA in another department and is on post grad employment work permit now. That could be a temporary solution and you could find a better paying job after getting the permit and apply for change of employers in your permit at that time.
