Subject: Happy Labour (Labor) Day!!!
Today, Sept. 5, 2005, is Labour Day in Canada and Labor Day in USA while Labor Day is May 1 for most of the rest of the world. I hope all will take a moment and appreciate efforts by labor unions, politicians, and workers to establish the eight hour work day and worker´s rights.

historically, I think they have been very important and continue to be important particularly in developing countries. I sometimes think they have outgrown their usefulness in Canada.

Without starting a huge war on the forum, Telus employees have to bring themselves and their mindset into the current economy and reality. Jobs for life is not reality.

Being a free enterpriser, the day my employees insist on how I run my company and spend my money... without any financial risk on their part, is the day I shut it down and put everyone out of work. That said, I think collaboration is healthy and in the best interest of everyone. BC´s forest industry is a prime example of this. The unions got realistic and worked with owners to save jobs and make the industry viable again. Everyone is happy.

Well in real world Labor Day means:

1. Day to drink all the beer you want
2. BBQ
3. Paid leave
4. People driving crazy - surging fuel costs even higher
5. One less day CIC is going to clear cases - another day of
agony for applicants waiting to hear from CIC.

Sharon:

I agree with you for the most part. I don´t know as much about unions in Canada as I do about USA. Also, I am a union member as a public school teacher. After being involved with my union, I know now that I would never work as a teacher without a union. When I compare wages, rights, benifits, etc. between union teachers and non-union teachers, in the states, the differences are unsettling.
But, you´re right. Unions need to change with the times in several ways. They need to facilitate the firing of inadequate and incompetent employees, as opposed to defending them forever. This would really help with their public relations/ image. Also, they need to work as possible with management so that all are happy, while at the same time management, especially in large multinational corporations, need to operate with consideration of public good/ ethics instead of simply how can I increase the profits of our shareholders.

Sorry for babbling.

Star Wars- you are right, that is what most people do on Labour Day. That is why I introduced this thought so we can all at least think for a minute why we have this holiday.

Greg, I live in a very polarized province hence DB´s question about my voting habits. (yes...to the horror of the rest of my family, I voted Liberal) School teachers have a very strong union in BC and a very radical one as well. They strongly support the ´labour party´ or as we call it - the NDP. NDP is a little more left of Democrats. Right now they are talking strike vote. First proposal on the table from the union is a 32% total increase. Ironically, the same teachers are saying that education is underfunded. If they keep taking it all in wages... they are right... the system continues to be underfunded. The BCTF also feels obigated to roll management issues into their bargaining. Somewhere a long the line, the union forgot who writes the cheques.

Like I said...polarized. You will find the most conservative political party in Canada is still left of the Republicans.

so... Happy Labour day!
