Subject: Quebec- A separate country?
Is it true that there are chances that QUEBEC will become a separate country? I am a student in Montreal and couple of my local friends were talking that if the conservatives (or liberals, I didn´t pay attention to the party) if they come to power in Quebec, there are chances they will make Quebec a separate country. Is that true?

it is a long term objective for Quebec to form their own country. It is also not a secret. Why...the reasons have been lost in globalization, etc but people have invested their entire political careers on the concept.

what it means... some time in the next 3-5 years the people of Quebec will vote if they want to become independent... then they will argue how to do it. remember... Canadians are polite so no guns will be required. If Quebec is not your style... you will likely have plenty of time to get out.

"it is a long term objective for Quebec to form their own country"

Not necessarily. This is the objective of the Bloc party, and not the whole province by any stretch of the imagination. The reason the objective (for the Bloc) becoming long term, is they realized through 2 failed attempts, that the majority of Quebecers will not seperate if given an honest (and direct) question asking them if they want to do so. Of course they need time, because at present, it won´t work.

The last referendum was a joke... the question was confusing and did not even ask Quebecers if they wanted to seperate or not. It simply asked them if they would support an independant Quebec government, where the people whould have all the benefits of being Canadian. It was a loaded question. Many of the people I know who voted yes, did so to vote "yes for French" and that is it.

The Bloc knew better than to ask:

"Do you want to completly seperate from Canada, and form an independant country, have your own week currency, need a passport to travel to Canada, assume all of the province of Quebecs debt, deal with natives which have rights to much of the land (including vast areas that produce a majority of electricity in Quebec), form your own army, deal with the US after you have pissed off their closest ally (Canada), try to form favourable trade deals with the US as a small country of 7 million, face tariffs from Canada and the US, the enourmous exepense of forming embassys around the world (and creating foriegn ministries and departments), dealing with potential trade wars with Canada and the US, deal with the mass emmegration of people to other provinces (the 3 or 4 million people who will be completely horrified to live in an independant Quebec... and yes, Ottawa will let these people in no problem), deal with all federal money from Ottawa being cut off........the list goes on and on.

What do you think the answer would be?

(Hint... it starts with an N and ends with an N, and has a big fat O in the middle.)

HA HA HA

I guess this issue has been going on for a while now...

But think... practically... is that possible...

Can Quebec survive bu itself ???

Today its Quebec... Tomorrow its Toronto... then its Alberta, BC, Manitoba, PEI, Nova Scotia, NF and Labrador... and Nunavat and NWT...

All go by itself... we cant survive... we need each others...

In short... I dont see it happening...

If Quebec goes... look out...BC and Alberta would do the same! Yes, the issue goes on an on. I know there are some issues for those that live in Quebec, but do I hope that the strength of our country and commitment to each other make it all seem like a stupid idea... yes, but you would have to ask a Quebequois the same question.
