  Hi,Sharon!!
I am here, in Canada. Well, what to tell.
We are landed in Vancouver Island, city Duncan. Border procedure was easy, but I did not export my car from USA.
Now I have to leave Canada to export my car but I don´t have my PR card yet. On the border they told me that I can come back with my visa if I just left to do car export.
What do you think, can I? or better wait untill I will get PR card.
On the border the police lady said that I may get in trouble to drive not export car in Canada up to $5000.

Everything else is fine. The only problem, the city Dancan is very small and old. For my family now problem to find house to rent or appartment. So far we are staying in hotel, but we won´t be able do it for the long time. Too expensive.

As you know I got job $22.00 per hour times 4 weeks a month. Total $3168 or so. After tax like what $1600-$1700. If my husbant will not find job, this is not much to left.
Gas $3 per gallon. Rent house $1000-1300 per. month.

Just like you to have an idea how we start from the "0".

Good luck to you and to people you help.
Tatyana

don´t know what to tell you about the car. I am sure the border staff are given you correct advice.

as for Duncan... yes, you are in small town BC. Check with a real estate office, they may know about rentals. I think you will be OK for money. overtime pay will help. figure on losing 30% to income tax.

This is only a start for you. keep your courage.

Yes, tatyana... you are taking too much off for tax. You should clear about $2000 per month.

You should also be able to find something for less than $1000 if its just you and your husband...

Food should cost about $120 a week for two people if you are frugal.

The following is an excellent tax calculator:

http://www.ey.com/GLOBAL/content.nsf/Canada/Tax_-_Calculators_-_2005_Personal_Tax

You type in what you expect to make in a year, and it will give you your combined provincial + federal income tax payable, along with your averag tax rate.

Your average tax rate will be only 18% based on the wage you gave (38,000 per year), but your marginal will be 30% (so, any overtime you get will be taxed at 30% or above)

But, you will have CPP and EI deducted off each cheque too, and the tax calculator will not take this into consideration.

Also, for 2005, your income will only be for 6 months, therefore your tax rate should be only an average of %11 (based on 19,000$ earned) but you will be taxed on your paycheque like are making $38,000 per year. Therefore you can expect a tax return in 2006 for about $1500 to $2000 or so.

Stay postive! You will be fine.

Dave

There is lots of winter work (oil fields) in Northern BC and Alberta if your husband has trouble finding work.

Duncan is a nice city to live, however they got most expensive property value amoung Mid-island( Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Duncan, Campbell River), It costs you average about 260,000 for a single family house. if you really have a trouble of finding house, please let me know. I have friends working as realtor agent in Duncan.

Thank you !!!!!!
Everything you told me is great. I feel much better.
I just found the house for $990 per month in the great area. Heat includes in this price, so I save probably another $150 per month. You can see the beach from the porch and house in the waking distance from the school for my son.
This is just start, you are right Sharon and life is good if you not expect too much from it.
But, the Canada is the big difference from USA, I can tell right now.
Thank you guys. Your help is priceless.

if you are boring or don´t know what to do in Duncan, you can go to visit local tourism info centre, which is located in" Save On Food" shopping mall close to the HWY.

don´t speed in Duncan, too many under-cover cops, haha~~they always hide in Tims~~~

you got job already right? that´s great, for that kind of wage, since most of my friends in duncan only get 8 dollars.maybe we are still 20s.

don´t know how long you gonna live there in duncan, if you plan to live here longer, please consider get yourself a property. it might be much worth

Tatyana don´t worry about disposable income too much. Try to enjoy the best you can in the income you can afford to dispose of... At least you don´t have to worry about healthcare too much.
