Subject: question for PR applicants
when your family, friends and co-workers find out you have applied for Canadian immigration...

1) do they say you are stupid for trying or do they encourgage you?
2) do they ask why you would want to go to such a cold place?
3) do they start to treat you differently?
4) do they seem jealous or are they happy for you?
5) have any of you ever experience someone trying to sabotage your application? have you ever heard of people doing such things?
6) do your family and friends think you betray them by leaving and they think you will never return- not even for a visit?

I would appreciate your answers.

Those are interesting set of questions.

1) Yes. Most feel it as a complete Waste of time and effort - since I´m in the U.S. they feel why I would even go anywhere else.
2) Yes
3) No. Just tease me every time and ask - so how is your Canadian Immigration coming along.
4) Indifferent. They really see the effort for Canadian immigration as a waste of time. Most are in process of U.S. immigration hence feeling indifferent.
5) No
6) Actually I´m already away from my family - but they have always supported in what I want to do. Anyways they believe in globalization. We all travel to meet regularly.

I sponsored my husband for PR (I am Canadian currently living in Switzerland) and here are both our answers:

1) My parents encouraged us and my husbands father think he is stupid for trying and throwing his life way.

2) My husbands parents have no clue what cold weather Canada has. My friends (who are flight attendants) have travelled to Montreal and know how cold it can be but wonder why I want to return to such cold winters :-)

3) No, they just used to ask if we had heard anything about our application before it was finished

4) Everyone is happy for us, that our dream has finally come true. The only person who is not happy is my husband´s father as mentioned above.

5) No

6) I have lived in Switzerland for 6 years and my friends in Canada never feel left behind. I visited Canada 3-4 times a year to see everyone. My new friends in Switzerland know how much I appreciate them (met most of them at work) and that I will come back for a visit as I will have to visit my in-laws once in a while. However, when my friends fly to Montreal or to Eastern US, they know I will come visit them there, even if it is a short visit.

Our PR application is complete with the landing done in March. We will be moving August 18th to start our new life.

Good Luck to everyone else!

l1) do they say you are stupid for trying or do they encourgage you?
no, not really, in the community I used to live (back to 4 years ago, there were quite large number of middle-classes immigrate to Canada).I am not sure right now, because I left my country for 4 years, I didn´t even go back for once. I think I know Canada more than my homecountry.

2) do they ask why you would want to go to such a cold place?
yep, i have relatives and friends in Richmond, they told me weather is not a problem, not cold, not hot.

3) do they start to treat you differently?
not really, your friends and family wanna you have a better future. Because of competition in my home country, I can´t what happen if I still live in there. It??s so freedom in Canada!!

4) do they seem jealous or are they happy for you?
They are happy to me, since so many families immigrate to Canada; it´s not a uncommon thing for us.

5) have any of you ever experience someone trying to sabotage your application? have you ever heard of people doing such things?
no, i guess people from my country usually wouldn´t talk about any thing relate to immigrate until they actually get paper, it´s your privacy, nobody cares actually.
6) do your family and friends think you betray them by leaving and they think you will never return- not even for a visit?

yep!!!my family misses me a lot, but I don´t know why, I feel less homesick than others. When do I have homesick? I left Nanaimo for 2 weeks, I miss Nanaimo, miss my Oceanside! Another thing is very terrible, I found out that I hardly can write any complicated characters, oh, my god! I could not read my language´s newspapers fluently.

when your family, friends and co-workers find out you have applied for Canadian immigration...

1) do they say you are stupid for trying or do they encourgage you?
They don´t actually say the ´S´ word, although I have a feeling it surely pops up in their mind. But that is just because I´m already in the US, otherwise maybe they may not feel it that weird.

2) do they ask why you would want to go to such a cold place?
This is a no brainer ! YES YES YES. As you know where I come from, this has to be on a FAQ on my list. LOL.

3) do they start to treat you differently?
Not really, its all the same as before.

4) do they seem jealous or are they happy for you?
Definetely not jealous, maybe close to happy.

5) have any of you ever experience someone trying to sabotage your application? have you ever heard of people doing such things?
No, never, not my or any of my friends applications.

6) do your family and friends think you betray them by leaving and they think you will never return- not even for a visit?
Not really. Well I have been staying away from my family for 15 yrs now. (except the once a year visit - this is like a ritual !) So they are kinda used to it. Friends do mention that it will be sad to see me leave for good, but since most are in the east coast of USA, they don´t make a big deal out of it.

When your family, friends and co-workers find out you have applied for Canadian immigration...

1) do they say you are stupid for trying or do they encourgage you?
I think my family encourages me as they understand my realisitc goals and ambitions. But i think some of my less-informed friends do ask me multiple questions. I noticed that the known ones appreciate.

2) do they ask why you would want to go to such a cold place?
Yes, some certainly do ask exactly the same question. I do tell them that I want a new experience. hi hi.

3) do they start to treat you differently?
Not yet !!!

4) do they seem jealous or are they happy for you?
Not jealous for sure, might be happier or neutral I think.

5) have any of you ever experience someone trying to sabotage your application? have you ever heard of people doing such things?
No.

6) do your family and friends think you betray them by leaving and they think you will never return- not even for a visit?
Not really. Well I have been staying away from my family for the past 14 yrs now. I do visit family and relatives periodically. Friends do mention that it will be sad to leave them, but their situations, including ambitions and goals in life are slightly different from mine. I think that they don?t make a big fuss out of it, they kind of understand.

I am sure this survey is going to kick start Sharon´s mind leading to indepth analyses and stimulating inferences. Good luck sharon.

Hello Canada (HC)
(in reply to: question for PR applicants)
don´t worry... you will not likely get any anlysis. I am trying to put my fiances experience into context- he is being given a very hard time. Wondering how it is for others. I think it is easier to come and find your way in a new country when you have a group of cheerleaders back home.

hi spike me,
i want to see your friends faces after their green cards are rejected and when they go back to india.my brother is living in US for last 4 years with a masters degree from US and he says its no big deal staying in US. Its not the the greatest thing if one stays in US.as far s i remember the greencard process have started becoming really tough after 2003.
Some of my friends with ph.d´s from US and working for top 3 companies in their area in US after their ph.d´s havent heard anything concrete about green card applications 4 years form their day of applying. So its much tougher nowadays buddy.Otherwise why you would have applied to canada.
