Subject: Sports scene in Canada
  Hi Guys,
What is the sports scene in Canada like ? Besides hockey, what other games are popular out there and how easy is it for the average person to play as a hobby ? Are there enough public parks per city/suburb ?
I just wanted to compare that with the USA. Inputs are appreciated, especially related to the game of Golf.

Forget about Cricket...it´s just like US, no one knows. Asian students in some univ. do organize it indoors

Due to harsh cold the outdoor activity is limited to 2-3 months (although I´ve played Tennis outdoors in -2, some experience!!). Though one can play indoor games just like US.

The very limited outdoor activity is somthg which CHOKES me here.

the westcoast report

there is a cricket league in Vancouver that plays in Stanley park during the summer-quite an novelty

Vancouverites brag that we can golf 350 days a year (rain or shine) and it would not be a shock to see die hards on the course December 26

Amercian style football and basketball are not big amateur sports on the west coast. Soccer is big around and there are leagues for all ages - even the old guys.

If you live in BC, the big winter sports are skiing, snowboarding, cross country, and yes... hockey (but not like in Ontario)

You have to imagine that winter in the Vancouver area means rain - rarely goes below 3 degrees. I wear a raincoat from about October to April.

ps... sports schoolarships are rare, we cheer because there are 2 Canadians in the NBA, and all the guys cut from the NFL come to Canada to play football for taxi driver wages.

Come on now Sharon, you are mentioning Stanley park as if you are talking to someone of Vancouver :). Although I haven´t seen any Cricket there but the ground is so small...anyways, something is better than nothing...have u ever seen Cricket there, just curious.

Hey it´s impossible/ impractical to golf in BC year round with all the rain and cold; I would say it´s not bragging but exaggeration. At temps lower than +15 (9/12 months) nobody enjoys staying outdoors for prolonged period. Vancouver is definitely much milder as compared to rest of the Canada when it comes to winters but this winter the temp. did dip to -10 for a week or so (remember the beautiful snow) and uptill now I haven´t seen many days above 20. I am craving for real summers to come and sweat a bit (although I´ll be leaving Vancouver soon :(( ).

Spikey you can definitely watch cricket but only on satellite channels for which u a pay a premimum...but if u r with friends u can share the cost and have way more fun.

hey! I did not say 365 days... you are right, there were seven days that were minus zero that still leaves 358! If you are a genuine golfer, and a true British Columbian, you are more than happy to play the back 9 in the rain.

as for cricket... you know the part of the park facing Cole Harbour, just past the totem poles? there is a big field there and a building called the Pavillion. That is where they play. Honest, I have watched them and it is a very strange game! are you saying the pitch might be small or that Stanley park is small! If you say SP is small I will put you in the middle and let you find your way out! it is huge!

p.s. that was the first snow we had in 2 years. if it gets much more than 30, Vancouver goes into heat exhaustion. Life begins at 9 degrees.
