Subject: Canadia trying to get married in Russia -- help!
I´m engaged to be married to my Russian girlfriend on July 15 of this year. The local official authority ZAGS wants proof that I am not married so I got Alberta vital statistics to provide a document stating that I have got been married since 1982 in Alberta and sent this document to DFAIT Canada for legalization and to be forwarded onto the Russian consulate in Toronto (as if a provincial document could prove that I am not married in Canada!)

But my question is about this "statement in lieu of certificate of non-impedance to marriage." (Could there be a more awkward phrase?). I need to product a document that states that the government of Canada has no preventions against me marrying a Russian citizen in Russia. Apparently the Moscow Canadian embassy will give me this but DFAIT will not! Thus I can get an official document from a Canadian consulate but not any Canadian government body in Canada????? This is insane. I will be getting married in Novgorod, a 13 hour train ride from Moscow. Just to go to the embassy in Moscow and get the documents and then to give them to the appropriate Russian officials will take a minimum of two trips (they have a long processing time.)

This is insane and very stressing. DFAIT Canada is -- excuse my language -- full of assholes that won´t respond but just refer me to the website. Any suggestions?

Hi Paul:
I enjoyed reading your note BECAUSE I liked the humor in it. I feel sorry that you have to strain so much despite being honest. Happens. Good luck with your wedding and wishing you a prosperous and enjoyable married life.

I have no clue about your questions. Sorry about that.

Best wishes again. Be happy.

You need the letter directly from the Embassy...I tried to get married in Poland and needed so much paperwork that we decided to get married in Canada. It was much easier.

"statement in lieu of certificate of non-impedance to marriage."

It is great wording......
It is basically a letter saying they can´t give you a letter saying you can´t get married.

This is the document that you need.....and I believe that it can only be received from the Embassy....if you want to get married, you really need this document. You may also need to register some papers in the court and have them translated and so on. The process is long and tedious.

Good luck with it!
I hope it all works out and is worth it.

A letter from the Embassy + a bottle of good champagne and a box of good swiss chocolates will do the job.. Give them to the Zags Lady that will marry you..

And don´t get drunk after the wedding.. because you will have to drink vodka.. especially after each "gorko".. and each "toast".. If you need more hints ask.. your friend Mikhail Semenovitch will help you gladly to dig into the Russian bureaucracy..
