I understand that I can live outside of Canada for 3 years, live inside Canada for 2 years in any 5 year period to keep my Permanent Resident Status. Is this correct? And if so, what is the procedure after the 5 years are up? Do I have to re-apply for Permanent residence again and pay the same about I paid this time around? How does it work?

(in reply to: I understand that I can live outside of Canad...) Once you have received your PR status, you must accumulate two years of physical presence in Canada in every five-year period. From what I have read on this forum, you must reapply if you do not meet this obligation. For more information about Permanent Residency obligations, visit the CIC website at the link below:

(in reply to: I understand that I can live outside of Canad...) Say you landed in Canada as PR on 1st Jan 2000. So till 1st Jan 2005 you should have lived in Canada for 2 years to maintain your PR.
After the first 5 years the time is calculated by counting the days present in Canada during the 5 year period from the present day.
So for the above example for a person to maintain PR on 3rd June 2005 s/he must have liven in Canada for a period of 2 years between 3rd June 2000 and 3rd June 2005. Hope that makes sense.

(in reply to: I understand that I can live outside of Canad...) do we have to live in canada continuely to maintain 2 year or we can go out 6 month and back to canada for 6 month and out again?

(in reply to: I understand that I can live outside of Canad...) No restrictions. Any combination you can think of is allowed. In the end you should have lived in Canada for 2 years out of 5 years.

(in reply to: I understand that I can live outside of Canad...) As I have asked this already, can anyone tell me what happens after the 5 years are up and you´ve met the obligations? A] Do you have to RE-APPLY and go thru the same procedure as the first time and pay the same fee again and wait the 5 - 6 months? Or B] You just pay a renewal fee and get a new 5 year PR status card? Anyone? Thank you!

(in reply to: I understand that I can live outside of Canad...) Hi Mery,
Read my first reply. You will not have to apply for PR again after 5 years OR pay any fee.
To maintain your PR status you will have to prove that you have been living in Canada for 2 years.

(in reply to: I understand that I can live outside of Canad...) yes it can be any combination as long as it is 2 years out of every 5 years. It does not have to be two years in a row.
