I shall be visiting Canada in summer - Quebec City.
Being a student, what is the cheapest and easiest way to travel between Quebec - Ottawa?
Do you have to buy train tickets in advance - or they are available on travel dates?
Is there an equivalent of South West Airlines in Canada?
Any advise is appreciated.

Take my advice: get yourself a nice Toyota Tacoma and get a good mattress in the back and a shell over it... and drive! I am heading to Quebec city myself; it is a good place to visit during summer.

Sadly, I have been to Quebec city only twice in my life. It is a little bit of Europe and a lovely place to visit in summer.
I will have to defer to the eastern folks for advice. I am a western girl. You cannot imagine how far Quebec City is from Vancouver. You could drive for days and not be there yet!

Tell me about the trains - does one have to book in advance or can really show up to buy a ticket (and get at same price as booked)?
I´m not sure about my dates of travel hence cannot book early. You advice shall be appriciated.

If you book in advance, the trip from Ottawa to Quebec is about $60. If you wait until all the cheaper seats have sold out, it´s closer to $100.
I definitely recommend the train to get around, especially if you can book in advance.
If you´re looking for cheap airfare, look at Westjet. Unfortunately, they don´t fly to QC.
