Subject: A few questions before landing.
I just received my PPR and ready to send my passport. However, I still have a few questions in mind.

1. How long does it take to receive the Maple Card after landing?
2. How much money do I have to show to the immigration office at the port of entry?
3. Do I have to wait in Canada before receive the Maple Card, may I leave the country shortly after landing and have the card send to my friend?
4. How long can I stay outside Canada without any conflict to the PR status?

Okay, in case someone may interested, here is my timeline.

2001-10 Application Number Received
2003-10 Medical and Additional Document Required
2004-10 Interview in LA & Medical Required
2004-11 Medical Done
2005-5 PPR received

Thank you.

1. How long does it take to receive the Maple Card after landing?

A: It can take up to 30 days to receive your PR card but it can come sooner. In my husbands case, he got in 3 weeks after he landed

2. How much money do I have to show to the immigration office at the port of entry?

A: If you are a skilled worker, you need to show $10,000 when landing. If you are being sponsored, the funds are not required.

3. Do I have to wait in Canada before receive the Maple Card, may I leave the country shortly after landing and have the card send to my friend?

A: You have to provide a Canadian address to immigration when landing. This is where you PR card will be mailed. If you leave the country before receiving the card, your friend can mail it to you. You will need the PR card in order to return to Canada again. Permanent residents returning to Canada by airplane, boat, train or bus must show their PR card to carrier personnel when boarding to prove their permanent resident status in Canada.

4. How long can I stay outside Canada without any conflict to the PR status?

A: You can stay outside Canada for max 3 years. Once you have landed and are a permanent resident, you have to spend 2 years out of the next 5 years in Canada in order to maintain your PR status.

Hope these answers help!

Hi,

I found this information at CIC´s website for you:

You must show that you have enough money to support yourself and your dependants after you arrive in Canada. You cannot borrow this money from another person. You must be able to use this money to support your family.

The amount of money that you need to have to support your family is determined by the size of your family.

Number of Funds Required
Family (in Canadian dollars)
Members

1 $9,897
2 $12,372
3 $15,387
4 $18,626
5 $20,821
6 $23,015
7 or more $25,210

You do not have to show that you have these funds if you have arranged employment in Canada.

Disclosure of funds:

If you are carrying more than CDN $10,000, tell a Canadian official when you arrive in Canada. If you do not tell an official you may be fined or put in prison. These funds could be in the form of:

- cash;
- securities in bearer form (for example: stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills); or
- negotiable instruments in bearer form (for example: bankers? drafts, cheques, travellers? cheques, money orders.)

I am not sure about having it in CAD dollar deposit outside Canada. However, I did find two other threads on this forum that might give you a bit more insight. The links are as follows:

I hope this helps you out a bit!

If it is your own money then carry it in TC.

If it is borrowed and stuff still pretend its your own and carry it in TC form... I think TC is much safer.

Once you are in Canada, can you cash in your treasury bills to pay your rent and buy groceries? If the answer is no - then your funds are useless in Canada.
