I am Canadian my boyfiend is American.

We are planning on getting married in Canada. How long would it take for him to get a working card as he can´t be here for any length of time unemployed.

He has a job in the US - can he return to the US to continue working until his canadian working permit comes through

How long is the whole process?

Thanks
Bunny

Hello Bunny =) My husband is Canadian citizen and I am an American citizen. We got married in the United States and after we got married we had looked at which way to immigrate, and we decided for me to move up to Canada. After our honeymoon, I returned back to the US and he returned to Canada. I will make a suggestion though, if you are both very sure that he will immigrate to Canada from the United States, there a few things that may help your application process. Since he will not be having a name change after ya´all get married, you may want to have him start doing his fingerprints when it gets close to your wedding. (mind you, they are good for one year from what I have been told. When I had my fingerprints done, I was told by the office that did the rolling of my prints that federal prints takes about 3-4 months to recieve back, although mine didnt take that long, I paid ALOT to have them back quicker.) He will also need to have prints from every state in which he lived for at least 6 months since the age of 18. So , if he has several states he must submit to, he may want to get a head start on that. I wish I could have started my prints much sooner than I had, but when I called the fbi office they stated for immigration, women who change their surname after marriage, would have to have current prints with legal name, and a previous name before marriage does not count, so....had to wait until I got back before I could send for prints. The best thing ya´all need to do is go through all the forms, there are some things that can be done before wedding which will dramatically cut time down to be able to send in your packet. My husband and I have been married a lil over 2 months and hopefully next week we can send in packet for him to get sponsership approval. The main thing to keep in mind is the time each thing has before the expire. Also , if he doesnt already have his passport, I would strongly suggest he get one as soon as possible. If everything is pretty much completed by the time you guys are married ( ex. fingerprints, photos, passport, copies of his birtcertificate, if he was married before ( copy of final divorce is needed), etc.) the will be bare minimum that will have to completed. The one thing that held me up for a bit was on one of the forms it asked for every address I lived at since 18 and the full addresses, and the other part asked me what exactly I have been doing for past 10 years or since the age of 18. That took time to get dates as close as possible, hehe for me that was close to 15 years of searching to do =) If I can be of any other help, more than happy to let you know what I have been through/ or learned from searching myself.

Good luck to you both!

Need help for family member (in reply to: Spousal Immigration from US)
My brother is American Citizen and wants to marry Canadian woman. She is from Nunavut and the problem we are having is finding out best way they can get married and he can move to Canada. This is not easy to find on internet.
If anyone can tell us what all they need to do before the wedding and how he can move to Canada afterwards I would greatly appreciate it. This is his first marriage and she is a widow if that helps. Also he had applied for work up there and the government turned down his work visa application since the job did not meet the criteria - will this have any affect on them getting married and him moving to Canada now? Also, Which country is better for them to get married in ?
Thanks~
