| Subject: Ability to stay in Canada before residency |

Hi All
I have been offered a job in Toronto, but have not yet moved to Canada, applied for a work permit, or applied for permanent residency.
What will happen if I am in Canada with a work permit, have applied for residency, and lose my job for any reason.
Will I be able to stay in Canada until CIC decides whether or not I am grated permanent residency.
The reason for asking the question is that I was in the US in 2003 without a Green Card when the company I was working for went through massive redundancies. I had to leave the US in a very short period of time. I would like to avoid repeating the experience.

No you cannot.
You have to stay with a valid document. PR application is not a valid reason till you get your PR visa on the passport and actually land to Canada.

This worried me too as I will soon be over on a WP, and I have a PR in progress.
If you lose your job for any reason, you can stay for the time period that your temporary resident visa was issued for. i.e. the same length of time your work permit was valid for.
In that time you can´t work for anyone else, but if you can find another employer who can offer you another HRSDC job, you can get another work permit. Your PR could also arrive in this time too.
