Subject: Sponsership
I am going to be applying for immigration to Canada through the family catergory, as a conjugal relationship. I would just like to know what exactl;y sponsership involves. It doesn´t say anywhere in the cic website what exactly is involved, and it is confusing. I am going back to England in July while I apply for PR, and I don´t want to live in Canda if I can´t work.

Does spnsership just mean that if anything goes wrong, the sponser would be liable? Can I still work if I am being sponsered and have a work Visa?

I would be very grateful if someone could answer my questions
Thanks

I don´t know much about sponsorship,
check out http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/sponsor/index.html
if that doesnt answer ur question u can call them and speak to an agent, these agents are there to answer ur questions:
1-800-242-2100
press 1, then 2 then 0
if the line is busy keep trying, sometimes I have to try 10 time in a row to get through to an agent.

I believe this number is only for Canadian Residents.

Is there is number to call from outside Canada?

your sponsor is responsible for you for 3 years- no matter if you remain married or not. if you are applying within Canada, for spousal sponsorship, I believe you are allowed to obtain a work permit.

When a Canadian citizen or permanent resident sponsors their spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner they are basically saying they claim all financial responsibility for the individual for 3 years. During the sponsorship period neither the sponsor or sponsored person can apply for social assistance. If they do, they will be required to pay it back.

It would take a long time to go into detail about the sponsorship process. But if you´re interested in knowing a bit about what you´ll need to do and all that fun stuff, just let me know and I´ll can tell you how my husband and I did everything. He´s Canadian, I´m American - he sponsored me for permanent residence after we got married, my application was handled by the Buffalo visa office.

Just a word of warning. From what I´ve heard, CIC is very very critical of conjugal partner applications and there is a high probability of the application being denied. You´re going to need to prove to them, beyond any doubt, that you´ve had a genuine, serious, on-going relationship; that your intentions are to consider in the relationship and eventually become married/common-law; and that the only reason you aren´t currently married or common-law partners is because you haven´t been able to live in Canada for any extended period of time. It´s a very difficult class to prove...which is why most people will suggest that if you and your partner are planning on getting married (but are just waiting until after you get permanent residence) that you get married before applying and apply as a spouse. While you´d still need to provide proof of the relationship, they don´t seem to be as critical of the relationship - ´specially if you show that the relationship has been on-going.

And sharon is correct.

During the sponsorship period, even if there is no longer a relationship between the sponsor & the applicant, the sponsor is still responsible for the financial well-being of the person he/she sponsored.

Also, if you apply as a Spouse/Common-law Partner within Canada once you receive your Approval in Principle from CIC you are eligible to apply for an open work permit. If you apply outside Canada you can work while your application is being processed, but you´d need a Canadian employer who´d be willing to sponsor you for the work permit. This means you´d apply for a work permit like all other non-residents (i.e - you first need to be offered a job by a Canadian employer and then receive HRDC authorization for the offered employment before you could apply for a work visa).

HI Mel, thanks for the information, it was really helpful. I would be interested in learning more about the sponsership process. There is not really a whole lot of information about it, and the descriptions seem vague. I was under the impression that I could get a work permit if I was applying form outside of Canada, but you say not? That means that I won´t be able to live and work in Canada until I acheive PR, which could take years?

You can get a work permit if you apply from Outside Canada, but in order to do so you need an HRDC approved job offer before you can apply for it (which, unfortunately, isn´t exactly the easiest thing in the world to get). I was under the same impression as you when I first started looking into immigration - that I´d be able receive an open work permit even if I applied Outside Canada. But when I came up to live with my husband (before we submitted the application) I asked the woman in Immigration and she said that wasn´t the case - that if I wanted a work visa I´d need a HRDC approve job offer first.

I don´t think you´d have to wait years informed of a decision on your application. The longest I´ve personally heard of it taking for a conjugal partner application was just over a year and only the rare application was actually approved.

If you send me an email, I can tell you more about the sponsorship application itself and atleast my experience.

Mel, how do I email you. Do you have to become a memeber to get your email address? How do I do that. Sorry to bug you, I´m just interested in hearing what you have to say. I´d hate to make a decision based on what I think is correct, if it turns out I was wrong.
