Subject: PR Card problems
I am very disappointed in the Canadian government and the process for obtaining a PR card. My husband was born in the US but was a landed immigrant at age 3 with his mother who married a Canadian. He has never gotten Canadian citizenship (it costs $500) but he has lived here basically all his life.

Recently the gov started this PR card requirement, now, he had the card but lost it. We booked the trip two months ago when we thought he still had it, we searched everywhere and realized we would need to apply for a renewal. A RENEWAL or REPLACEMENT of a lost card takes LONGER than a first time card - wh..wh..wh...WHAT - Makes NO sense. And we were told it would take 75 days unless he produced travel documents.

So he supplied our airline tickets when he applied almost six weeks ago and the date on them noted we are leaving for the USA THIS Friday - still NO PR card and he tried several times to call but only gets a machine that hangs up on him. The one time he got through, he talked to someone who didnt know anything and only told him his application for an Urgent or expedited PR card was declined - and no reason or notification was given of this.

I am STEAMING mad now that we have to waste more money and time from our very expensive vacation trying to get more passport photos and more proof to get a travel document that we also may not get in time before we return (website says it takes 30 days to get a travel doc at the Canadian Embassy in California).

This is red tape at its most exquisite. My husband and our family does not deserve this type of treatment from a government he has paid a lifetime of taxes to. The phone systems, the lack of communication, the time it takes is all unacceptable. I want to know who we can talk to in order to make a formal complaint about this entire pathetic process.

Thank you.

Does he have a US passport? He must have some kind of passport in order to travel. If he has a US passport, then he can leave and return without the PR card. He doesn´t need a travel document to return. If he holds a US passport he´s visa exempt.

Bang on advice way to go Anonymous.

PR cards are used to assist airlines with not ending up with the cost of removing travelers to Canada. If someone arrives without a PR card from a country that requires a Canadian Visitor Visa the airline is responsible for covering their removal costs (ticket).

Enjoy your vacation, BE HAPPY.

When you return to Canmada get into the line for PR´s and Citz´s.

Yes, he has a US passport (in reply to: PR Card problems)
Thanks for your response. It sounds hopeful. Yes, he has a US passport. So are you saying because of this he doesn´t need to worry about having a PR card for this trip?...and you don´t think he will have problems at customs in getting back into canada or on the aircraft from US to Canada in getting home?

what should he say at customs? (in reply to: PR Card problems)
So, what does he say at customs when they ask what he is doing in Canada? Does he say he lives there, if so, then won´t they ask him to produce his PR card?

Are you saying he should lie and say he is just visiting to avoid problems?

No, we aren´t saying he should lie. Never lie to immigration.

When he arrives at customs he should show his passport and identify himself as a Canadian PR. He should then explain that the renewal of his PR card is in progress and the card wasn´t ready before he left for his trip.

The airline will certainly let him board. Again, he holds a visa exempt passport. Airlines don´t ask about the purpose of your trip. They just want to see that you have the travel documents required. A US passport is all that´s required from their perspective.
