I have read a lot of comments about people being deported at the POE for not having a good reason for their visit in Canada. I am very nervous now as I continue reading your posts.... so my situation is this - I will go to Canada to get married with my common-law partner who just landed in Canada, and no, I did not qualify as common-law partner before he got his PR, only later.

We planned that I go in a 1 week trip to Edmonton to get married, I will have my return ticket for 7 days later. I do not want to lie to the officials but I dont want to be deported either! Specially because the plan is to apply for outland sponsorship after.

What can I say, how do you recommend to handle it?

Thank you!!

PS I have more friends in Edmonton whould I just get an invitation letter from them?
PS2- I AM coming back in 7 days

Think of the way that any (CBSA) Officer who is in Edmonton would view your comments.

CBSA Officer "What is your purpose for coming to Canada today"?
Nina "To visit friends".

CBSA Officer
"You came all this way for just seven days, why"?
"Which friends, were do they live and what is their status in Canada"?

Now focus on the long term plan of your Spousal Sponsorship questionnaire. You flew to Canada for SEVEN days to get married.
Did you have a reception?
Who picked the reception location?
Who paid for the reception?
Did anyone travel with you for your wedding?
Was there a honeymoon?
How did your relationship develop?

It sure looks like your headed for a refusal based on regulation 117 (9) (d) that you were never examined prior to your partner becoming landed.

Now why does your partner not return home and marry you there were your family resides.

Far better love story for your sponsored person questionnaire. My partner could not handle being a landed immigrant without me and missed me so so much they asked me to marry them.

Any pair of cards is far better than ace - king before the flop. Go with the odds.

I have doubts with regards to how it is you were not common law prior to his landing which as you said was recently, and now you miraculously do?

I am not an immigration lawyer or anything, but even I can see your headed for trouble. He should have mentioned you in his application. CIC is going to question it.

As Roy mentioned, 7 days for getting married? It will not look right in the IOs eyes. If you can make it 2 weeks at least.

If your main concern is getting past the border(poe), your idea for a letter of invitation is good. Just be prepared to answer questions about the friend you say is inviting you. 2 weeks is a common vacation time it shouldn´t cause any issues.

If your going to get married, have any family or friends from both sides involved. Even if it is a simple party afterwards. I don´t know what your plans are but I wish you all the best.
Get pictures, and keep receipts.

Even if you lived at the same residence and shared the same bed it does not mean that you would be in violation of regulation 117 (9) (d) but just getting accused of that violation would take two years to resolve.

Now why does your partner not return home and marry you there were your family resides. - I cant get married in my country because of the law here, I have a prohibition and the marriage would be invalid. I have to get married in a different country.

I can only travel 7 days because its the time I can have off in my job. I dont want to lose my job since I will stay in my country until the process in completed

He landed, came back to my country then we became common-law partners, then he went back to Canada to start my application process.

We have planned this before but marriage is not possible in my country and before I did not qualify as a common-law partner, we completed 1 year of cohabitation AFTER he landed and came back.

Does it still sound that bad?

Thank you
