Subject: Work permit for a spouse returning canadian citize
  Hi,

Me and my wife are married for 10 years(no kids) and living in US for 15 years.
I´m a US citizen and she is a US and Canadian citizen.

She grew up in Canada but didn´t live in Canada for last 10 years and she is going back to Canada and doesn´t have a job there yet.

We are both business professionals with masters in business.

What are our options for me to get work permit asap in Canada(Ontario-Toronto)?

Like I said she doesn´t have a job there yet and I know she would have to show financial stability to support me if anything, but we do have enough saving that can last both of us even if we are not working for 2-3 years.

Is there a specific amount Canadian govt would like to see in saving to ignore the fact that she doesn´t have a job there yet.

How long would it take for me to get work permit if I go there and apply for it?

How long will it take if she goes by herself and applies for work permit if I stay in US working until I get Canadian work permit.

I would appreciate your answers.

Thank you,
Jim

She doesn´t need to apply for a work permit. She is a Canadian citizen.

There is no category for what you want to do. You can´t show up in Canada and apply for a work permit, it doesn´t work that way. Unless you find an employer that wants to go through the channels to get you a work permit. That has to be done while you are OUTSIDE of Canada.

Your best choice is for your wife to sponsor you as a family member outside of Canada and then you can move to Canada as a Permanent Resident (aka Landed Immigrant) so you can start working right away.

The process might take between 8 months to 2 years. She can start the sponsorship process from outside of Canada while in the US. Actually that is the best way to go.

Thanks for your response, I´m aware that she doesn´t need work permit herself because she is a Citizen.

I´m just confused with the 8 months to 2 years waiting period?
Are you saying I have to stay in US and wait that long until everything is solved or and I can go to canada and start work, or is it that long to get permanent residency solved.

I´m really not concerned how long it will take to get papers resolved once I´m there, but I´m concerned how soon can I go there and start working after this process is started.

Thanks,

There are two ways in which your wife can sponsor you for PR: inland and outland.

If she sponsors you inland, you will qualify for an open work permit approximately 5-6 months after the application is submitted (and assuming there are no complications with the processing of the file). The inland process assumes you are living in Canada while the application is being processed.

If she sponsors you outland, you will not qualify to work until your application has been fully approved and you have become a permanent resident.

If you want to work earlier / sooner - you will need to find an employer in Canada who is willing to hire you. That employer will need to seek approval from the Canadian government to hire you unless you fall under NAFTA. If your employer receives approval to hire you - you can then obtain a work permit.

There´s really no "immediate" solution. Everything will take time.

8 months to 2 years - Outland
6-8 months to obtain a work permit - Inland
and 2-4 years for the application to be finalized.
