OTTAWA — The federal government believes some 1,800 Canadian citizens have obtained their citizenship through fraudulent means and it intends to revoke their status, Postmedia News has learned.

After a lengthy investigation by police and the department of Citizenship and Immigration, letters have been issued to hundreds of Canadians telling them the federal government intends to revoke their citizenship.

Individuals can challenge the decision in federal court but if they don´t, cabinet will move to void their Canadian passports and strip them of their citizenship.

Some of the people targeted are believed to have used crooked consultants who submitted fraudulent applications from people who didn´t meet the qualifications for citizenship. Others may not have lived in Canada long enough to have obtained their citizenship legally.

It is possible, a source acknowledged, that some of the 1,800 may themselves be victims of crooked consultants and have unknowingly committed immigration fraud.

This story is a joke!

Victims of crooked consultants, LOL they signed that they lived in Canada at a particular address when they didn´t!!!!

If they paid a crook - they paid a crook!

The fact that this one guy in Halifax may have called himself an Immigration Consultant at one time does not in any way take away from their own guilt.

Check out the National Post article. http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/07/19/government-plans-to-revoke-citizenship-of-1800-on-fraud-concerns/

One Lawyer claims it is wrong to live in a five million dollar house if your income is only $30,000.00 Wait until Thursday Morning after I win the lottery I´ll have an income of zero in a five million dollar house.

People don´t find consultants they find criminals like themselves!

What gets me is why would you need a Lawyer to fill in a Citizenship application???? Especially if your well off it is only logical that your educated enough to complete the form.

Been here since ______ lived at all of the following addresses, sign here!

Q: Why would you need a lawyer to fill in a Citizenship application?

A: They are ´Can´t speaking English´. When they are, they need someone, crooked or not, to fill in the form.

For the last thought, there is no excuse for breaking law whether knowing or not.

The absolute best comment about this situation is what Guidy Mamann said. One thousand and eight hundred Federal Court applications with the court so overworked now!

WOULD TAKE YEARS!!!

Best comment today on the web!

Hi Roy (in reply to: Feds plan to revoke citizenship of 1,800)
There are people who are just lazy about filling out paper work or they just don´t like to deal with it, regardless of their social status. I have a friend who paid 500 just to extend his visitor´s visa. He also was charged 135 dollars by a consultant just to answer 1 single common sense question from his citizenship application. It is ridiculous, but true.

Mary - our system is slow because people insist on breaking the rules. That means EVERYONE waits longer, has to jump through more hoops and is guilty until proven innocent. You can try calling your MP but they usually say they have no influence.

Thanks for your reply Sharon. I have already contacted my MP , they had me sign privacy forms so they could speak to cbsa and cic. The comment was these things take time, stay safe, and due to privacy laws thats all they can say. I feel i am not safe as the person i reported has a serious criminal record, cbsa has already confiscated his passports as he was deemed a flight risk , but as long as he retains his citizenship he has the same rights as I. Cbsa has all information, a slam dunk case, as the lead investigater calls it, he has sent the file to cic months ago but cic has done nothing with the file. It is so frustrating as i truly feel i am not safe vic toews has emailed me as well as others but yrt my x is still living under the same roof as I. Its awful how slow the cic system is. Priority should be given when safety is an issue.

If you are in danger, you should not be in the same house - leave. Don´t wait for CIC system. Make sure you file your concerns with the local police as well.

Seriously, get out.
