Four Sri Lankan refugee claimants have been arrested in Toronto and charged with human smuggling after arriving on Canada’s West Coast in 2009 aboard the freighter ship MV Ocean Lady.

The men, all between 32 and 39, were part of the crew of the freighter, according to RCMP investigators.

“All of the other passengers on the ship would have been paying to be transported to Canada,” Sgt. Marc LaPorte of the RCMP said on Tuesday.

The arrests were in the GTA on Tuesday morning and early afternoon, LaPorte said.

They were the first arrests in the case of the Ocean Lady, which carried 76 illegal migrants to Vancouver Island on October 17, 2009.

The arrests are part of Project E-Panurgic, which probed the Sri Lankans paying thousands of dollars to sail from Indonesia and Thailand.

The four men will be transported to Vancouver to face charges, LaPorte said.

Most of the people aboard the ship moved to Toronto after they were released by the Immigration and Refugee Board.

The investigation was conducted by the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency.

Charges with human smuggling are: Vignarajah Thevarajah and Francis Anthonimuthu Appulonappa, both 33, Hamalraj Handasamy, 39, and Jeyachandran Kanagarajah, 32.

“The RCMP Border Integrity Program is dedicated to protecting Canada’s coastline as well as combating and disrupting any attempts to exploit the border such as in this case of human smuggling,” Superintendent Tom Jones, officer in charge of the RCMP Border Integrity Program in B.C., said in a prepared statement.

Glad to see that the RCMP has arrested people suspected of involvement in the odious crime of human smuggling: http://tgam.ca/C9L1

Does it look like he wants to be Judge, Jury and Executioner? What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Like one or two arrests will prevent fellow country men from assisting others?

One day a freedom fighter the next a terrorist.

´suspected of involvement´ - I think that is the innocent until proven guilty part.

Sorry Roy, you are on the wrong side of public opinion on this one - understandably so... but none the less, lots of folks are tired of the ´perceived easy access´ into Canada.

What about the stupid, ridiculous, totally inflated ACCEPTANCE RATIO?

48% from ALL countries!

Is that logical?

To me it makes more sense dealing with the situation that the approval rate seems too high, not how the claimants get here. If the acceptance rate was more reasonable fewer would ever attempt to come.
