I´m a permanent resident that is likely going to be going to Japan on an exchange program through my University. I won´t find out for /certain/ until April, possibly even later than that, and am expected to be heading to Japan by August this year.
However, I landed back in 2001 when they were still using a paper as proof of permanent residency. I still have that paper, but have been told I need to pay $50 to get a permanent residency card to travel by air now.
On the CIC phone line, it says they´re processing applications for PR cards from July 2010. I don´t know what I should do -- applying now with no proof of travel will not make a speedy application. But, how speedy is one WITH proof of travel?
Also, I applied for Citizenship last August. It still says it´s been "received", but no further processing has been done. What will happen if I become eligible for citizenship during my time in Japan? Will I be able to complete it through an embassy in Tokyo, or will I have to reapply or something? I really hope not. >.<

(in reply to: PR/Citizenship / Exchange Student in Japan) It´s a little too close for my liking... They´re just now processing applications from July 2010. That´s 7 months. Even if I apply right now, 7 months from now is the end of August and would be too late -- and besides, that´s not to say people who applied in July are getting their PR cards. Just that they´re now ´processing´ them.

(in reply to: PR/Citizenship / Exchange Student in Japan) If you don´t get your PR card handy by the time you´re going to Japan, you may apply for travel document from Tokyo, Japan.

Did you know that those who apply for citizenship may be requested for their RCMP fingerprint (randomly selected) or interview ( due to questionable residence obligation or frequent travel)?

(in reply to: PR/Citizenship / Exchange Student in Japan) You can request "urgent" processing for your PR card:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/pr-card/apply-how.asp#urgent
The citizenship process (test, oath) can only be completed from within Canada. If you choose not to return to Canada for the test/oath, then your application for citizenship will be declined and you´ll have to start again from scratch.
